Traveler2586 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Forgive me if this topic is a repeat. I've searched Forums as best I can and came up short, so if you know of a good topic on this subject please post a link for me. I've just purchased the Lowrance HDS-7 Gen 2 with Structure Scan and I'm planning my installation. I'll be using my boat (when i get it back) on the Potomac River which has, from time-to-time, a lot of flotsam or other things to hit. I don't want to install the LSS2 transducer where it can be hit and damaged. So my question is "where do you believe is the best location for the Trans on the rear of my "Step Back" Ranger? I don't have a jack plate, my Mercury 150 EFI is mounted directly to the transom. Here are some options from the installation manuals. Here is another option.... I just don't have a good understanding of the bubble turbulence in the transom area at low speeds on the Ranger. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 The LSS-2 transducer is quite large and that may limit where. I will send you a PM with a source for installations for a lot of boat brands. 2 Quote
martintheduck Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 You can trust whatever Wayne says... he helped me. I ended up installing my transducer on my jackplate and haven't had a problem yet.... and I've been going through some stumpy crap. 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted September 26, 2013 Super User Posted September 26, 2013 Are they building you a new boat? It's been a couple months already, hasn't it? Quote
Traveler2586 Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 Are they building you a new boat? It's been a couple months already, hasn't it? Ya, I hit the shoal July 10th. It was at the Ranger dealer for a month, home for a weekend, and now in the body shop. Hopefully, it will be home this weekend. I've missed some of the best fishing time in these parts. Quote
BenB54 Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Here are a few pics of mine on my ranger. I don't have any problems as far as wash/bubble turbulence. The only thing i had to do was flip the left/right on my hds units because it was a cleaner install to mount it backwards. Hope this helps. 1 Quote

Thanks Ben, this is one option for the LSS-2 I'm considering. Do I need to worry about the LSS-2 being perfectly horizontal? Also, how do you use the skimmer transducer while you on plane? Quote
Traveler2586 Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 UPS just delivered my HDS-7 combo and Ram D-111U-C mount !!! Now,,,, if I only had my boat Man, this Ram mount could hold up my truck!!! It's way too big and has to go back; the HDS-7 mounting bracket is lost on top of this mount and only two holes match up. I don't know the dimensions of the HDS7, but that mount is perfect on my 998 and needed for rough water to prevent the graph from moving. Quote

Also, how do you use the skimmer transducer while you on plane? I think you should be fine mounting the lss-2 flush with the bottom as most of your structure scanning will be done at lower speeds but, that might be something to look into. As far as the skimmer mount, I was having trouble with the transducer that was mounted inside the hull and decided when I did my new electronics to put it on the outside. I don't get a reading while I'm on plane but I personally do all of my scanning/sonar at low speeds anyway. Quote
