I see a lot of guys that state they'll fish another bait when they can't get a spinnerbait through the cover.  In thick weeds and grass that isn't matted, that's one of my favorite tactics.

1oz spinner bait in a grey or bluegill color slam it home and grind it out.

Is grinding the slop not known as a productive pattern in bass fishing as it is in other species?

i love throwing blades in grass. deadly when ripped free. late july and august in my neck of the woods I can only throw them on the edges.

blade baits burned through the slop can do some serious damage! Just be sure to throw it on the right tackle to haul a hawg outta the mess!  ;)

As long as you can keep your blades and hook from getting fouled, there's really no type of cover than you cannot fish a spinnerbait around. They work just about everywhere. The heavy ones can make a great pitching bait around slop and emergent weeds.

I fish spinnerbaits more than any other lures, and mostly around weedcover. If my blades are getting fouled more often than not, I usually feel I'll catch more fish if I switch to frog, swim jig, or paddle-tail swimbait.  If I snag the spinnerbait in the weeds, which I often do, I'll have to motor in and spook the spot to retrieve it, and the wire will get bent up.

What do you mean by slop? Slop to me is matted over grass, water chestnut, pads, etc. If you guys get spinnerbaits through that stuff, more power to ya! That would drive me nuts. I'm more of a frog or pitchin type.

Pads, milfoil, coontail, cabbage, etc.

I love it. It is a well known tactic around here. You don't want to launch it way the hell out there. Instead focus on making short accurate casts using a low roll cast or even pitching to points on the weeds and through the lanes or any other nooks and crannies if there are any.

Short note: A single willow can come through the cover better as it sheds the grass. It also helicopters on the fall better when pitched.

Are you fishing edges, or bombing it right into the middle?

Yes. ;)

Seriously, though, fishing the edges and right in the middle.  making full coverage casts and hitting holes and pockets in the vegetation.  I've caught some of my biggest fish this way.

Every time I tried doing it through weeds and muck, always tend to get weeds stuck on my hook. I'll have to try getting a weedless hook.

Muck/scum/algae/crap or what ever you want to call it is a different animal all together. It will completely nulify a spinnerbait.

Joe Bucher makes a "Slopmaster" spinnerbait, especially for going through the heavy stuff.

Yeah, and it works really well for large bass.  One of my favorites, too, is another Muskie bait: Pearson's Grinder.
