jiggz125 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Hi All: I need some help. I was wondering what everyones favorite weighted hooks are and how they use them? I currently fish berkley power worms, senkos, havoc pit boss, havoc craw fattys, and paca craws..would like to start using hollow body swimbaits as well. Whenever I use standard texas rig my bullet weight is getting hung up on almost every cast..looking for alternative rig. Wondering what size weighted hook people use, how the use them and what type they use. I see Gamakatsu makes an EWG weighted hook and also Mike Iconelli has one as well that looks pretty cool. Thanks for the help Quote
aceman387 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Do you peg your worm weight against the hook or let it slide freely? If I am fishing in thick stuff I like to use rubber bobber stoppers to pin my weight against the hook to minimize weed problems. Quote
Lip 'em! Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 The only time I use a weighted hook is when fishing hollow body swimbaits like Strike Kings 4.5in Shadalicious, or I will occasionally rig a Rage Craw on one to give the fish a different look. I use gamakatsu 5/0 screw-lock weighted superline hooks and have been very satisfied with them so far. Every thing else though I generally just texas rig or put on a jika rig. LIke aceman said depending on the cover you're fishing and the presentation (flipping vs casting for example) sometimes its better to peg your bullet sinker, but for me most of the time its unpegged. AGOSS Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 i use a weighted hooks for lizard baits so they glide and is a little different look to the bass! and they crush It! Quote
jiggz125 Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 Thanks, I have never tried pegging my sinker, I will give it a shot. What weighted hook would you suggest on a Gary Yamamoto Swimsenko 5"? 1 Quote
Arv Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Depends on the situation. I usually fish mine unweighted, thats not in deep water or trying to punch through mats though. I usually fish a senko as a slow falling finesse presentation, but like any worm, it can certainly be fished faster Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 Yes I uae them for certain baits... mentioned before lizards and craw where just want it to fall alittle faster.. Quote
michang5 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I've had a lot of luck recently with KVD Perfect Plastics 5" flukes and a weighted, spring-lock hook. I started with 3/0 Gamakatsu 1/8oz hooks, which I had purchased to work with the smaller Zoom flukes. They worked with the KVD, but I kept gut hooking fish. I was hoping for 5/0 Gamakatsu 1/8oz hooks, but the lightest 5/0 they make are 1/4oz. So I picked up some Owner 5/0 in 1/8oz. Initially, I found that I was pulling up more grass with the Owner hooks. I think it's because the weight is a "ball" on the hook, rather than streamlined. But this morning, I did my best ever (4 fish in 90 minutes from the bank) using the KVD and Owner (with no grass). jiggz125 Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 Sounds good, I am going to try and get some weighted hooks and give swimbaits a try. Do you cast and reel back? Is most of the action derived from the bait itself or do you need to create the action with your rod movement? Quote
michang5 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Add a swivel 18" above your hook to reduce line twist. I use 20 lb. braid > swivel > 12 lb. Invizx fluoro > hook. Here's what did so well for me today: Cast it out. Wait 5-10 seconds for it to sink. Keep rod tip up at about 10:00. Two or three short twitches towards your head (to about 11:00). Reel in slack pretty quickly (my line was semi-slack). Pause 2-3 seconds. Repeat. Watch your line. Twice today, I didn't feel the thump-thump; the line just swam away. Reel down your slack and set your hook. Quote

Thanks for the help I use regular bullet weight, keel weighted hooks and owner sled head type of hooks. For keel weighted, I use both twist lock type and EWG type hooks. They all have a little bit of differences which makes them better choice for certain situations than others. When I read your post saying you get hang up on almost every cast with t-rig, I got the impression you are talking about getting hang up on the rocks, not the weeds. Am I correct? In the case, lightest keel weighted hook (or even weightless) might work as bait moves more horizontal than vertical. EWG type have less of hook sticking out from the bait, so times that makes a difference. Quote
Super User webertime Posted September 26, 2013 Super User Posted September 26, 2013 Thanks, I have never tried pegging my sinker, I will give it a shot. What weighted hook would you suggest on a Gary Yamamoto Swimsenko 5"? I read somewhere Yamamoto recommends an eighth ounce sinker for that. Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 For a weighted hook I use the one I offer. It works excellent for fishing above grass or a flutter slow horizontal fall presentation. Quote
jiggz125 Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 Thanks for all the help. I am excited for trying out swimbaits. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 26, 2013 Super User Posted September 26, 2013 For 4/0 weighted worm hooks mister twister has them on clearance right now there $0.50 a package I think the weight is 3/32-4/0 hook. Quote
aceman387 Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 What rubber bobber stops do you use? Where do you get them from? Thanks I ran out to my truck to look in my fishing vest and i must have lost them today while i was out in my kayak...lol. There are all kinds of brands and they sell them at bps or a local bait shop should have them.I just go with one of the smallest sizes so the weeds don't get caught on it. Quote
Amarley Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Gama makes a good one. Just make sure you buy the ones with a screw lock. One of my go to baits nearly all year is a EWG weighted hook with a Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper. Rarely get hung up and they catch hogs. The Gambler Big EZ is solid, too. Quote
hookset on 3 Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 For pegging try these Peg X Stoppers. Available online at Tackle Warehouse. Quote
jiggz125 Posted September 27, 2013 Author Posted September 27, 2013 Looks like strike king caffeine shad has good reviews and most people including KVD fish them weightless. What size hook would you guys suggest, I think they are 5" long, I will be getting some tomorrow. Quote
michang5 Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 I've had a ton of success recently with the Strike King KVD Caffeine Shad. I've been using 5/0 spring-lock, 1/8oz weighted Owner hooks. I've posted a lot about them recently here: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/124978-caffeine-shad-and-gama-spring-lock-weighted-hooks-a-deadly-combination-literally/ and on this Texas Fishing Forum thread: http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/9342027/1 (Pages 2 and 3) I went out again this morning and got two fish on three casts. Unfortunately, I only had two shads left and both got torn up within 15 minutes. I threw the rest of my soft plastics at them with no luck. Quote
