TiNuts Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 So I bought two new Stradic Ci4+ 2500s. I got home and both of them are noisier than hell. Both have identical noises which is a sort of rubbing sound. The rub always occurs at the same point in handle rotation. One reel is slightly louder than the other and actually sounds like there is a catching with the rub. My revo sx spinning reel makes this same d**n noise which is why I upgraded to the stradics (or so I thought). I don't feel it in the handle, it's just quite annoying. I've played with the Ci4s before and they've always been quiet and smooth, or I can't hear them over background noise in the store. Is this a normal noise for current spinning reels? Does anyone have a comparison between the revo and stradic? ie: did I really upgrade, or just pay more $ for no benefit? Thanks! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 24, 2013 Super User Posted September 24, 2013 Take them back, new reels should be PERFECT. 2 Quote
Capt.Bob Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 X2,,,,,, And don't let them tell you they need to break in. I herd a clerk at bass pro tell a guy that about the older CI4 a couple years ago, ticked him off cause I told the guy if ain't right out of the box it ain't never gonna be!!!!! take em back.!! 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted September 24, 2013 Super User Posted September 24, 2013 If I buy at BPS or a local store, I like to have the clerk open the box and I will test out the reel first. I've handed back one and asked him to open another as I wasn't satisfied at the feel/sound/etc. I'm dropping some hard earned $$ and I want to walk out with one that is primo. Hope everything is okay between you and your wife. 1 Quote
Missourifishin Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 So, what does your wife do when you tick her off? 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 24, 2013 Super User Posted September 24, 2013 I'd take them back. Quote
TiNuts Posted September 24, 2013 Author Posted September 24, 2013 Ok. I will take them back. That sucks because I was really excited for these reels. Any recommendations for a spinning reel that doesn't make rubbing noises and is smooth? She just chews I disagree when I tick her off. She wouldn't buy a new husband. She has her hands full as it is. She'd probably just go full lesbian after me. 1 Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted September 24, 2013 Super User Posted September 24, 2013 hope your wife doesn't read this and follow the given advice. She'll be taking you back to exchange for a more properly functioning model. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 Take them back, new reels should be PERFECT. X2 Quote

Super User MCS Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 full lesbian? what is she now? 1/4 quarter? give the marriage a few more years to work LOL Quote
Gaerith Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I have the ci4 and it doesn't make any noise. If you really like that reel try exchanging for the same model, probably just defective models. Ironically, I bought my ci4 for the same reason! Quote
TiNuts Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 Ha ha. She's zero lesbian now. My father in law has a ci4 and a patriarch and I thought the ci4 was a bit nicer of a reel. He does too. I thought about a patriarch or a revo premier, but I wasn't impressed compared to the stradic a and even cheaper shimano reels. Quote
TiNuts Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 Apparently chewing my a** turns into chewing I disagree. Funny. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 Yeah Pflueger, a supreme XT or Patriarch would be what your looking for and you will forget about those other reels right quick. agree totally !!! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 25, 2013 Global Moderator Posted September 25, 2013 Yeah Pflueger, a supreme XT or Patriarch would be what your looking for and you will forget about those other reels right quick. I had 2 supreme XT's. I loved the reel but ripped the guts out of both of them on the hookset with a shakyhead within 2 weeks of each other? Set the hook, they'd slip badly, then make a terrible grinding noise and just continued to slip badly. I'd really like to try a Patriarch but I'm afraid the same thing would happen with it. As for the OP, I have one of the older C14's and it doesn't make a sound. Quote
TiNuts Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 I'd really like to try a Patriarch but I'm afraid the same thing would happen with it. This is my issue with the pure fishing reels. They all seem to be identical reels, just different bearing count and different cases. Therefore, if one has issues, than I'd expect the rest to have issues. My father in laws patriarch feels almost identical to my revo, which has this same rubbing at a certain point, which you can feel. I can feel the same thing in his patriarch, at the same spot, you just can't really hear it as much. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 If yall are ripping gears in a spinning reel ....I'm wondering are you holding your rotors when you reel???????? ain't no way this is happening unless you got 65lb braid and that spool is locked and your using a x heavy rod!!! :-) Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 Don't give up on the Ci4+... the next one will be buttery smooth and worth the time it took to get this right. My wife orders $200 boots and $100+ jeans whenever she sees a new TW order arrive. I have to get that timing just right to keep the closet from filling up. Quote

Fortunately my wife isn't into expensive jeans and shoes. Or jewelry for that matter. I lucked out in that department. She does, however, like to order workout DVDs and shakes and crap. I suppose that isn't a bad thing. Quote
Hogsticker Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 The only non metal spinning reel I have found that doesn't make some odd noise is a Fuego. Pick up a couple stradic fj reels and save a few bucks. Just my 2 cents. If weight is an issue I would look at the pflueger supreme xt of patriarch magnesium reels, though I've seen a few of those that make some odd noises as well. Quote
TiNuts Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 Thanks hog sticker. I will look into the fjs. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 I'd take them back and go to a different store, any 2500 and under reel should be perfect out of the box and should give years of trouble free service, all my freshwater reels have. I have run into cases where the reel was a bit "sluggish" out of the box, all 4 I looked at were identical. Knowing the manufacturer and model I bought the reel anyway, I opted not to flush the bearings out and put new oil in, took a little bit of time to break the reel in and it's now one of the finest performing reels I own, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.
