travis23 Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 So I just purchased a new Abu Garcia Premier spinning reel from Tackle Warehouse. I opened the box and there is some little plastic washers and it came with another part which looks like an extra thing that you wrap the line around. If that makes sense. I don't know what it is called, but I don't know where these parts go. Can anyone help? p.s. This is a very sharp looking reel and feels durable. I hope this is the case since I spent a good chunk of money for the reel and a Villain rod 7'1, Medium. Is this a good setup for all of my finesse fishing? Worth the money? Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted September 24, 2013 Super User Posted September 24, 2013 there should be a owners booklet with the reel that explains everything . Quote
travis23 Posted September 24, 2013 Author Posted September 24, 2013 True, there is. I just don't understand it. It explained the washers but not the big piece. I'm pretty new to all this. First reel I have bought that I have to put together. I just want to make sure I do it right and that I don't mess something up. Quote
Cgrinder Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 A Medium Villain might be overpowered, depending on what you consider to be finesse. Are you saying it came with a spare spool? Quote
Capt.Bob Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Put line on it and try it, I can't believe it isn't ready to use and the plastic disc are probably spool shims that are only used for setting up a spool to wind different from normal, most will be perfect as sold. Try it and with use you should figure it out. Ask if you find it isn't ready and you will be better prepared to explain what you need help with. I'm pretty sure your new reel is ready to use!!! Good Luck and enjoy!!! Quote
travis23 Posted September 24, 2013 Author Posted September 24, 2013 Yes, I guess that's what it is. I just didn't know if it was something that I was supposed to put inside. I maybe only had 5 minutes to look at it and was confused. My girlfriend was due to have our son today, and had to rush to the hospital. I'll check it out more when I get home and do as you say. Thanks! Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 They are without a doubt shims, all my Abus and my stradics came with them. I personally prefer to spool reels myself, machine spooling will not indicate whether there is a stacking problem. If memory serves correct on the first spooling I don't recall having a stacking problem, but I have a few times on my second or third respool. I don't have an explanation on why it happened but it did. Not necessarily brand specific, I call recall it ocurring on 3 of the most popular brands and models used, a few shims and all is well. Super User .RM. Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 They are shims that mount onto the spool axel. They adjust how much the spool osscilates in and out.. I would place all 3 on the axel, then start spooling line, if it lays to far to one side more than level, take 1 off.Usually the standard setup is 3. ... Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote

I believe the shims wear as you use the reel, eventually needing replacement. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 I believe the shims wear as you use the reel, eventually needing replacement. I don't believe that the shims wear or need to be replaced. The shims are placed on the axle and the spool over them, it becomes a solid unit. My question is, why if the spool stacked fine in the first place, why would the line stack differently at a later time? Seems to be one of the mysteries of life like, how did 1 sock disappear from the dryer, even after checking all the other items to see if was attached by static electricity?........lol. Quote
TiNuts Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 What about when drag is pulled? I see what you're saying about the solid unit when put together. My revo sx has a bearing on the shaft under the spool that the shims but up against, I'm assuming for when drag is pulled. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 25, 2013 Super User Posted September 25, 2013 Don't know how to explain. Drag washers sit atop of the spool, when the knob is tightened only pressure is applied to the drag stack. I don't' think any pressure is on the shims. Quote
travis23 Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 A Medium Villain might be overpowered, depending on what you consider to be finesse. Are you saying it came with a spare spool? You were right. I think medium the rod is a little more stiff than I wanted. My 7'6 Veritas seems a little more stiff too. However, I wanted a longer rod and medium was my only choice with that. 6'9 was the next down and it was ML. I did manage to get my 8lb Berkley on and made a few casts in the yard. Besides being a little stiff, the set up feels great in my hands and very comfortable, which to me is pretty important. Maybe I'll take the extra spool and shims down to the local tackle shop and ask nicely to show me how to put it on. Quote
