So I hurt my back at the gym about 2 months ago. Ended up with 2 herniated discs which are hitting the sciatic nerve and causing all sorts of havoc. I am slowly on the mend but want to do some bank fishing, has anyone dealt with this and did casting seen to aggravate the injury? I would love to just take my spinning rig and some senkos and walk the bank fishing but don't want to prolong my recovery. Thanks and happy fishing!

Ask your doctor.

The issue is way too complicated and important to rely on advice

from this or any other forum.

I've dealt with major back problems since 2005 & this the only advice necessary!

I feel your pain. I got accute pancreatitus three months ago and have only fished once and that was sitting in the back of a boat for four hours....I paid for it with pain for the next three days. Doc says my pancreas is like jelly right now and to take it very easy...food and exercise wise. The thing has got my whole core messed up. Lower back included.

Take care...be patient and listen to a good Doctor.

Future tight lines

i had the same thing along with a compressed disc also in my lower 3 bones and they were all twisted too lol...just dont lift heavy stuff and walking will relieve some of your sciatic nerve pain...if you havent already talk to a chiropractor they fixed me up in like 2 months but i had to go like 3 times a week for a couple weeks..although when he started after like the 2nd or 3rd visit i didnt have much pain anymore

mine got so bad in the beginning that i would get out of bed and fall right back in bed because the pain was too much

also try not to sit toooo much apparently humans arent meant to sit...natural for us is to stand or lay down and hope you feel better cause back pain suckssssss

I have 3 lumbar vertebrae going in different directions that present problems much like you describe. I manage quite well by stretching throughout the day and flipping upside down on an inversion table that my chiropractor recommended I use to keep everything aligned between visits.

I'd check with your doctor before looking into an inversion table for your injury or whether or not movements involved in bank fishing can indeed aggravate your situation, but it can vouch for its worth: I've been using mine for 5 or 6 years now with great relief.

Best of luck.

Like others says, you need to ask your doctor.

Having said that, you probably posted to hear others' experience. I have bad back. I get this episode now and then. Mine happened gradually, not like yours. Also it sounds like your condition is a lot serious than mine is. So maybe there's no comparison here.

The best thing I did for me was that I read books and learned about it. I've learned from books that being active actually helps get better and keep it better. Stay home and being stationary is the worst thing to do. My layman's understanding is moderate exercise will actually drive the blood and oxygen into the area which helps to heal. A couple of books I liked: Back In Shape by Stephen Hochschuler (Texas Back Institute) and Framework by Nicholas DiNubile. I also rented video from library. It was Yoga video specifically designed for back problems. It feels so good to do these Yoga.

Again like some said, each one of us is different. My comment above is not an advice, just sharing my experience. Talking to doctor is very important.

BassNewbie, my wife had to have a neck surgery before her first of seven back surgeries followed by three hip surgeries and she is still in pain.

Please see your physician and do all they say to do, no matter how dumb it sounds.

My wife is almost an invalid due to the doctors messing up her leg nerves. We are waiting to get another MRI to try to find out why she still has pain down her leg and in her hip. Of course, her hip surgeon says all is great and there is nothing he can do. Time will tell.

Backs can be very difficult to fix 100% even with today's technology. All the best for a full recovery and back on the water next year. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Every once in a while I will throw out my back.  It takes about a month to heal up, and during that time I can hardly bend or get in or out of the car.  Went to the Dr. years ago with it and he said that there is nothing that they can do for it.  It will just need time to heal.  That being said, casting in itself does not hurt my back because I'm doing most of it with my shoulder and elbow.  What does bother me is walking the bank on uneven surfaces.  I do much better from a boat where I can sit down after a while and rest my back

So I got the ok to do some fishing as long as I took it easy and didn't try to hookset a volkswagon... Went after work and got this beauty on a Big Bite Baits Cane Thumper in Green Pumpkin color, the bad thing as you can see is that he/she broke my almost brand new Abu Veritas rod, I'll be giving them a call tomorrow to replace it :)post-43442-0-84731100-1380064645_thumb.j

Nice job! Probably made your back feel better too. Being couped up and avoiding everything is every bit as bad for your back  as doing too much. Glad to hear your doc was good with you going as long as you took it easy...

Bad back but a nice bass, good job! Ive been hesitant to go back out too. Last trip out fishing I put mine out again, trying not to fall out lol. my situation may be differant since I have a birth defect where the lil ear thing thats on the lowest vertebre is like 3x the size and touches another bone beside it when out, it falls out every single weekend I go ice fishing too. But ive found that daily stretching, and not sitting in my recliner dramatically helps heal. Instead of a doctor try seeing your chiropractor. Reason I say that is --MY-- dr pushes pills (maskes the problem) where a chiro can fix the problem! Strecthing for me though seems to keep my back inline alot, although co workers give me weird looks haha, it helps tho

I have a back injury from an IED in 2005. The best thing to do is to stretch and walk. walking on a soft track is best, as it is both soft and usually pretty even. uneven terrain is still problematic, but walking and standing are the best thing to do. Sitting down all the time seems like a relief at the time, but will cause you more pain down the road. movement is the best therapy.
