Can anyone tell me about red hooks, especially on cranks? What are the benefits if any? I have some cranks that need new hooks. Thanks everyone.........

Some say it gives off the illusion of injured baitfish others say its a target for the fish to key in on. if red hooks will make you more confident i say use em.... if not black nickel gamakatsu trebles will work just fine.

I REALLY don't think it makes any difference. My biggest complaint about red hooks

is that the paint wears off quickly.

I know some VERY good fisherman who swear by them.

They won't throw a crank of any size, in any condition without one, and it's ussually only on the front.

I tried it a few times, and still have a few rigged, but honestly I don't see a difference.

It's about marketing. Tackle companies are in business to make money selling fishing tackle. As with most fishing products, it doesn't matter if the lure or hook catches more fish. The important thing is that it catches fishermen. Every day someone comes out with a new product to make you think you have to have it to give you the edge to catch more fish. Anybody remember G finish? How about the Color Selector? Red hooks, red line, square bills, fluorocarbon line, HydroWave, the list is endless. Some of the new stuff does work, most of it is just another way to get you to open your wallet.  Red hooks probably won't hurt, probably won't help either.

I don't know if it makes a difference but it gives me more confidence in my bait and that will catch you more fish for sure. Plus the hooks I buy are the same price for red or black nickel so I'm not paying any extra either.

I´m a VERY GOOD fisherman that don´t care what color the hook is, as long as it is excellent quality and razor sharp. I´ve fished with red, silver, bronze, black hooks on my cranks for more tan 3 decades and see absolutely no difference in the catch ratio.

If you think,/believe/imagine/hope that red hooks ( or whatever color for that matter ) are going to make the most insignificant advantage for you I´m the first one to recommend you should use them on every bait you own, the only thing I have to say against any color hooks is when you sacrifice quality and sharpness for color.

I tried some red worm hooks.  The paint peeled off, the points rolled over and the hooks bent.  I don't know if the RED made any difference or not.  The problem was they were just cheap hooks.  I've never seen a quality worm hook in the color red.  Maybe they exist, but I just haven't looked for them.

The sign of a good red hook is one with the paint knocked off. If it comes in red ill buy it. I was always told it looks like blood or something. I dont believe that. I think they look cool though. I fish things without red hooks but ill go for red over black or any color. Now if they came out with blue hooks, i would be all over those.

same crap different smell....i would prefer the hooks to blend in with the color of the bait but really i just grab the hook i want no matter if its red blue green orange pink its all the same

I don't care what color the hooks are and I don't think the fish do either.  I've used red worm hooks with no problems.  I've been buying kroc spoons that come with red hooks, no better or worse than any other color, they don't stay red all that long.  Hook replacement time for my trebles, 3x of any brand for my freshwater and 4x perma steel for my saltwater.

I don't get a lot of bites when I use red worm hooks, but on cranks it doesn't seem to matter.  I think the red hooks blend in with the crankbait color on the retreive.

I have some red gammys (finesse widegap) for wacky worms but I don't feel there is any difference or advantage to a red hook other than a slight visibility increase in stained water. The paint comes off really easily. However, if a company came out with green pumpkin or watermelon colored hooks i'd be all over that. Finicky fish pay attention.

I think on cranks and topwater they just give another target and for reaction baits that's what you want.  But worm hooks in red, i've had NO LUCK.  Stick with the regular color hooks on the worms.  I think it's a matter of time that the bass has to look at the lure.  If it's running by quickly or popping the topwater I don't think they have enough time to study it that hard.  But if it's a worm that they're studying closely I think the red turns them off....  This is purely opinion and NO SCIENCE to back it up, but to my knowledge there is NO SCIENCE around this red hook discussion.....

In stained water I don't think it makes much difference at all but in very clear water (such as what we had in Canada) where the fish are shy, red, shiny treble hooks can trigger bites.  Not always, perhaps, but often enough to make them worth considering.

Red hooks are supposed to imitate a bleeding fish, red line is supposed to disappear in stained water...Things that make you go hmmm....

R.W. is correct. Red wears off pretty quickly revealing what I think are inferior hooks.

Anodizing will only stick to certain metals. All the red hooks I have seen wear down are gold underneath.

Not too strong and don't seem to hold a sharp point too long. If they give you confidence, by all means use them.

all my red hooks are gammys and i dont think they are inferior. They do chip up to gold, and they still catch fish. Im a firm believer that hook color doesnt make the slightest difference.  If you cant catch fish with red hooks id bet money its a confidence factor.

Thanks to all who replied. I personally never thought the color really mattered to fish. I just have about 2 dozen cranks that could stand to use new hooks. I found 11 packs of the KVD TRIPLE GRIPS EXTRA SHORT,on sale for 5.88. Ive used them before and man theyll keep fish hooked. Just didnt know on red.

Thanks again guys,good fishin.......................
