I have been tying jigs with thread. I really like the fact that the skirt will not spin after it is finished.

I asked a question a couple months back about tying with wire. It seemed everyone liked it due to the speed. That is a drawback with tying with thread because I am so meticulous it takes longer.

I went today and bought some wire that others suggested. My problem is when I get it finished the skirt will spin just like if you were using the bands. Is that normal? Or should I tighten it more to eliminate the skirt spinning? Just don't want to break the skirt.

soopd,

Tie the skirt tighter. How many wire wraps do you put on your skirt? I have broken the wire before cutting a skirt, so don't worry about that unless you are using very heavy wire. My skirts do not spin and they will not come off. There is a tutorial posted on tackleunderground regarding tying with wire, or you can PM me your phone number and I can explain it to you along with sending you the tutorial.

3 wraps and twist tighten the wire and I'm done and the skirt won't budge. Wire is nice because it's fast but thread is also nice because you can really match the color thread with the color jig you're tying and it won't rust or corrode.

I do like Bluebasser - three time around pretty tight and then twist the ends with a locking hemostat to get it even tighter. I leave about 1/4" tag end and fold it over. I also like the fact that you can use a matching or contrasting color wire. I know you can use any color thread also, but it doesn't stand out like the metallic shine of the wire.

I take a 2" piece of wire and I bend it in half making a "U" shape, I put the "U" over the jig and pull both ends at the same time so they cross and I leave it like that so it is loose enough to put my skirt tabs in. Once I have the skirt in position I grab the ends of the wire with pliers, 2 pair, one for each wire end and I pull tight and then wrap both ends around the jig just like the first wrap, again I pull the ends tight at the same time and then I make two twist by hand and this next part is how you tighten it up. After your two twist, grab the wire with the pliers at the bottom of the twist and then begin to twist, if everything is right you'll notice the wire getting very tight, if you keep twisting you will either break the wire of cut the silicone so when you get it tight just check to see if you can move the skirt, if it is tight and the skirt doesn't move then trim the twist ends of wire so there is only a small piece sticking up and then use your pliers to fold it over and it is done, it is easier than what it sounds like but there should be a video on you tube. Good luck.
