pbizzle Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 I was watching Facts of Fishing and saw him catch a bullfrog on a hollow body frog. How common is this? Have you done it? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 21, 2013 Global Moderator Posted September 21, 2013 I've done it several times. Some places there's so many big bullfrogs it gets really annoying when they keep chasing the frog and I keep having to reel it away from them. We used to use a grub on a aberdeen hook to catch bullfrogs for frog legs when I was a kid. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted September 21, 2013 Super User Posted September 21, 2013 Yes, several times. I used a small single hook weedguard frog I think was made by Berkley--about 30 years ago. Bull frogs are cannibles and eat their own. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted September 21, 2013 Super User Posted September 21, 2013 Yea I have to I hook em in the lip...only happened to me once tho and it was on a hollow body frog Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted September 21, 2013 Super User Posted September 21, 2013 It was a SK sexy frog how could a frog resist! Quote
pbizzle Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 Man, I've been left out of this bullfrog stuff. I did have a water moccasin chase my frog once but that's it. Quote
TheMightyQuinn Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 One time I had a bullfrog engulf the 9 inch lizard I was throwing. The entire lizard and 5/0 hook was in its mouth... Quote
Dyerbassman Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Frogs around here love my plastic worms. Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Had to dig through my photos but I finally found one. This frog just jumped on top of my lure but didn't try to eat it. This frog was released mostly unharmed. Caught on a sexy shad Spro popper frog. I've since learned to differentiate a frog from a fish strike, so I don't really catch them anymore. But they strike pretty frequently. I've also caught a lot of birds and northern watersnakes on topwater The snakes are fun, the birds are just mean. Quote
pbizzle Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 I imagine that they don't really fight, but just feel like you're bringing in some weeds. Quote
CPBassFishing Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 I've caught at least a dozen this summer. The ponds I fish have about a foot of floating scum all along the bank and whenever I fish frogs along the bank and they come out of the cattails and eat it. Quote
Christian M Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 I've caught several big bullfrogs using hollow body frogs. I've heard that bullfrogs are territorial and will chase anything that comes within their area, I don't know how true that is. I did read an article about a technique using frogs to catch Lunker bass. The article recommended using a splitshot or dropshot rig to weigh the frog down using a leader that gives the frog just enough line for the frog to barely reach the surface. It said that the commotion of the frog trying to reach the surface would attract big bass. Never tried it though. Quote
Mr. Wilson Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 one time my uncle caught a goose--yeah that was interesting--broke the line though---poor bird--lol Quote
McFurie Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 never caught but ive seen em tryn smash it was using a live target frog in the bullfrog color i honestly thought he was tryn to mate with it Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 one time my uncle caught a goose--yeah that was interesting--broke the line though---poor bird--lol I catch seagulls quite a bit in the fall on poppers. They're rarely hooked, however. They usually will hold onto the lure until I reel them in though, then give me a dirty look as if I'm stealing their fish. They don't fight very well. Once I caught a peregrine falcon on a popper. It was hooked on it's foot. Unhooking and releasing that bird was one of the scariest things I've done while fishing, but I got it done without getting attacked. 1 Quote
Big Jon Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 I just caught one the other day on a Booyah frog. Quote

I caught an owl on a jitterbug while I was night fishing several years ago. Thankfully it crash landed in some blackberry bushes and pulled the hooks loose or he would have been keeping my jitterbug. Super User Bankbeater Posted September 24, 2013 Super User Posted September 24, 2013 I have never caught one, but I have had several chase a spro frog across the lake. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted September 24, 2013 Super User Posted September 24, 2013 A little over a week ago caught one. Had an ika on put the rod down to use lipless crank rod and the ika rod started moving. Im like wth grabbed ika rod and frog on with trokar hook poking out side of its mouth. Quote
tholmes Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I've caught a few bullfrogs on hollow-bodied frogs and on weightless t-rigged plastics. I once had an osprey grab a Zara Spook and fly off with it. Fortunately, he didn't get hooked. I'm sure that if he had, it wouldn't have ended well. Tom Quote
