BadBassWV Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Was fishing today Casting a Jig with a craw trailer to the bank. Hooked what seemed to be a 5-6 LB Turtle. My question, If a Turtle will eat a craw will he eat a Bass?? Turtle was hooked in the mouth, so he obviously ate it. Quote
MIbassin Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Yep, i have a small pond around here with a big 70-80lb snapping turtle that has taken chunks out of some decent size bass Quote
Brian Needham Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 survival of the fittest at its purest........just nature running its course. No worries either way. Quote
BadBassWV Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 just was wondering how many pounds of fish this beast would have to eat each day to survive? Quote
Brian Needham Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 if it's a 80 snapper, probably as much as he wants. LOL I am not getting close enough to ask. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 21, 2013 Global Moderator Posted September 21, 2013 just was wondering how many pounds of fish this beast would have to eat each day to survive? He's cold blooded so it will depend on the water/air temps. A little 5 pound snapper probably subsides more on a small bluegill or bass or craws than bigger fish. When the water temps cool down they don't have to eat very often either. Quote
CPBassFishing Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 I have caught a bass with a turtle bite. There is one in my favorite pond that has a shell the size of a garbage can lid. Gotta be at least 60lbs. If I am fishing with my brother and he guthooks a bluegill I toss it to the turtle. It doesn't bother the bass (I caught the bitten bass somewhere else) so I don't mind it. Super User Bankbeater Posted September 23, 2013 Super User Posted September 23, 2013 I have had turtles go after super flukes before. I kept getting short bites and when I got the flukes in about half of it would be missing. We finally saw the turtle and moved on out of its area. Quote
Arv Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 A lake I fished back in NC had turtles galore. Not too many snappers but I did hook one that was probably about 5-6#s as well, on a wacky stick worm. Plenty of other times they would nip at my lure if it got close enough. Quote
Lostinthewoods Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Jigging from the bank today, I spotted a HUGE snapping turtle just feet from where I was standing. It was just under the surface and apparently eyeballing my bait. Judging by the size of this dinosaur I'd say they have no problems biting into sizable fish of all species. Quote
NC_Bass6 Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I think this may be a problem in a pond i fish. all summer huge carp would come up with chunks taken out of there mid section. I was always told by other fisherman it was someone bowfishing but i believe now that it was probably a turtle. With the size of the holes in the fish if this was a turtle it had to be pushing 30-50 lbs! Quote
