CC268 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Alright so I have this 50lb trolling motor for my Pond Prowler: http://www.basspro.com/Minn-Kota-Endura-Max-TransomMount-Trolling-Motors/product/12091105032624/ I mount it on the front. When I first went out I noticed that forward pushed the boat backwards and reverse pushed it forward. I switched the handle to the other side and went out today. Forward went forward and reverse went reverse, as it is supposed to. However, I noticed it seemed slower than when I had the trolling motor actually pushing the boat (maybe it was in my head). My question is...does the propeller face first in the water or is it supposed to go behind the little fin? It looks like I have it the right way.... Thanks, sorry for the noob question...new to trolling motors. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 That is a transom mount trolling motor so placing it in the front will only allow you to go forward if the motor is in reverse. I have no idea if you can slide the handle around or not but i am sure someone else will chime in. Quote

And I can only mount a transom mount on my prowler anyways....hmmm maybe I just have to put it on the rear? Just doesn't make sense because they have a plug in for the trolling motor on the front of the boat Quote
Super User slonezp Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 I believe there is a way to reverse the head on the motor, and there are also companies that make an adaptor to mount a transom mount on the bow of a boat. I don't know if it would work on a pond prowler. Quote

I don't know if it would work on a pond prowler. It is already mounted on the bow of the boat. It appears I have it right, I just thought it was odd that it seemed like I got a bit more speed when the propeller was facing first Quote
Topwaterspook Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I had a Minkota trolling motor that I mounted on the front of my canoe. I don't remember the model but I was able to remove the top housing and turn it 180 degrees. It worked fine until I got rid of the set up. Good luck. Quote
cbass12 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 If forward was pushing you backwards you might have had the wires on the wrong teminals. Make sure you connect positive to positive and negative to negative. If they are switched this will happen. I'm not sure about other brands but all the minn kota hand controlled motors I've used have been able to have the head spun around for transom or bow mounting. Quote
JD96 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I have a minn Kota transom mount, just put it on the back if you fish alone, you can use the front space to stand and for rods. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 Probably just in your head, though it is possible on that small of a boat that by shifting the trolling motor weight to the front of the boat, you might have created a bit more drag by making it a bit nose heavy in the front now. If you can get your hands on a handheld GPS unit you could find out for sure. Sounds like you switched it right. Just undo the small screw under the head where the handle is and rotate 180 degrees, then replace screw and retighten. Hand and motor should now both be facing the same way, and as you mentioned, forward will = forward, etc. Did that with a MK for 5 years myself until I finally upgraded to a standard bow mount motor. -T9 1 Quote

I didn't even know you could do that until a friend of mine that works at Cabela's told me about it. Quote

Just one screw out, spin the head around, and you have a bow mount trolling motor! Quote
