John G Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I am looking at 6'6" MF for squarebills. Good choice or look for something else? Specifically a Loomis MBR782. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted September 19, 2013 Super User Posted September 19, 2013 ideally i prefer a moderate tip but fast action would suffice Quote
Arv Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Ive heard a few guys that prefer a fast action for squarebills. I dont get it. I prefer a mod. Action. Quote
DirtyDeuceGoose Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I use both a moderate action and a fast action to throw squares. Moderate if I'm in a situation where I'm fishing it like a crankbait or fast action when I'm fishing it more like a spinnerbait. Both have worked well for me. Quote
Fishwhittler Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I like a fast action better than a medium, though I also like a moderate-fast for some lures. For me, a faster tip has a crisper feel and gives more precise casting. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 I use a 7' MF. Works well for me Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 I also like a fast action but i go with MH myself. 1 Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 I'll take a shorter rod about 6'8" to 6'10" a true MH with a F/XF action. I want to get those thick trebles hooked in nicely, then play the fish slowly, but I still have a lot of power to direct them from cover. JMHO. 1 Quote
bmlum415 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I like a fast action dobyns champion 703c, the non crankbait rods Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 I like a MH mod fast graphite rod for sq bills. In general, I go to a more moderate rod as the baits get deeper. I never use a regular fast action rod for 1.5 or larger sized sq bills but I do use a med ex-fast rod for small sq bills like the RC 0.5, KVD 1.0, Lucky Craft Clutch.....etc. Quote
MediumHeavy Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 A Powell MH/F rod has been great with squarebills for me. 12# Sunline Super fluoro on a 7.0:1 reel. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I prefer fast action for treble hooks b/c it allows you to snap the hooks free of weeds which can generate some great bites (especially with lipless cranks). a moderate action loads up and gets kinda soggy and drags the lure off the weeds. moderate action is def better if ur deep cranking in open water. just be aware not to horse a fish to much with the fast tip. let the drag and rod do the work, not ur biceps. that is pretty much a great all around utility rod and you won't be disappointed. will work for so many things: topwater, lighter jigs, worms, spinnerbaits etc etc. after using it enough you'll settle in on a technique you like best Quote

Paired up with a Curado 50E it should make a really nice open water rig. Quote
Khong Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I am looking at 6'6" MF for squarebills. Good choice or look for something else? Specifically a Loomis MBR782. Any treble hook would be best use with a moderate action because you don't want the hook to fling off. As far as medium power, it depends on where you are fishing at. Bumping rock and stump is fine for Medium power. If you are to ripping through grass, i would recommend medium heavy power. As far as line, I would go with mono because the extra stretch will help the lure not to fling out again. Again, there is nothing wrong with treble hook on fast action. You just got to be careful that's all. Quote

I am using that very rod for squarebills, and small crankbaits and find it to be excellent for the job. IMX MBR782 with a Curado 50E Hootie Quote

Super User *Hootie Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 We will have twins! LOL You will not be disappointed with that combo. Better than a Super-sized Whopper combo. Hootie Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 Anytime you use a fast action rod for treble hooked lures it should be a medium power and the reason for it is because the lower power is more forgiving so it won't pull the hooks free from the fish as quickly as a MH would. I was using the medium power fast action rods for jerkbaits and shallow cranks for awhile until I found medium heavy that was true moderate fast action, the tip is fast but apply pressure and the flex moves futher down the blank making it not quite parabolic but more forgiving than the normal fast action rod. I would think that the MBR 782 would be fine for smaller square bills like the KVD 1.5, Bomber square A, or RC series 2, the larger models will be too much but if you stick to the medium and small square bills then I think you have a great rod for those. Super User ww2farmer Posted September 20, 2013 Super User Posted September 20, 2013 I prefer moderate action, unless I am ripping them out of grass. Then I go with a fast action. I get a better "pop" off/out of the grass with a fast action. Moderate tends to load up too much. I only switch if it's a problem, often times the moderate action rod will pop it free just fine, but there's times when it won't. Quote
