Hey Guys, I'm thinking about getting some power pro red braided line and I was wondering if it is really visible in the water and will I need a leader? Also I've heard that the color comes off on your hand and drips into the reel is this true? Any help would be great.

I've had 65lb red power pro on my frog rod for about a month now. I haven't noticed much color loss and I've gotten no color on my thumb. As far as deterring a bite it hasn't turned them off frogs, but those are topwater so I'm not sure if it would affect sub surface lures

I tried it out a few years ago. The staining was awful. Perhaps PP has a new formula that doesn't bleed as much. But that pretty much ruined it for me.

As well, I like a highly visible line, so prefer yellow PP instead.

Should a use a leader on that?

I always use a leader with braid. So my recommendation is a hearty YES! But you'll find others here who do not.

That said, the leader can help with retying as you won't have to keep cutting your braid (except to tie a new leader)

I have been using 40lb phantom red power pro this year and the color does come off and has dulled. I will probably clean my reel at the end of the year anyway, but the dye has come off onto my reel near the line guide and on the reel seat. As for line visibility in the water, I don't think it matters too much but most of the water I fish has lots of weeds and is pretty murky. The line does get difficult to see as the sun starts to set.

I also use moss green pp super slick 15lb and I haven't noticed any of the dye coming off that line.

Add me to the yellow PP (Super 8 Slick specifically) and leader list.

However, I go straight braid with frogs and topwater. I just use a green sharpie on the first 2'.

I USED TO USE THAT LINE.MY REELS AND ROD CORK TURNED RED.YOU CAN RECOLOR IT WITH A RED MARKER. THERE ARE MUCH BETTER BRAIDS SUCH AS SUFIX 832 OUT NOW.I'VE ALSO USED CAJUN RED CAST MONO.CAUGHT PLENTY OF FISH ON IT.I DON'T BELIEVE IN LEADERS.I NOW  FISH STRAIGHT MOSS GREEN SUFIX  832 . I DON'T THINK FISH ARE LINE SHY.I'VE FISHED STRAIGHT BRAID NEXT TO GUYS FISHING FLOURO AND SEEN NO DIFFERENCE IN CATCH RATE.

It´s not a visibility issue the use of a leader, you may not beleive it but braided line is not as abrassion resistant are you think it is. You got here let´s say your 30 lb test braided line, well 30 lb braided is around 6 lb test mono line thick, that ain´t much thickness ! so it wil suffer abrassion very fast, specially when rubbed against rocks, if you use a leader ( 2-3 ft length ) you got your thin main line and 2-3 ft of thicker line ( the leader ) in the part which suffers the most abrassion. That is why you use a leader and not because the fish can see the line.

Sufix 832, Ghost,,,,,best Braid,,,, no dye so it doesn't bleed!!! Best of all worlds, and real abrasion resistance, you won't get with other braids!

I seem to always go back to original PP in moss green.  Have 2 reels spooled with slik and the jury is still out on it as my bass season really hasn't started yet.  I don't care about being able to see the line, much of my fishing is in the dark, and in most cases the fish don't seem to care.  I use 10-15# in fresh and 10-15-20# in salt, leaders about 2' are always used and swivels most of the time except for flats and mackerel fishing, but not a set up I use in freshwater.  Has served me well over the years.

I fish 832 on cranks through rocks with no abrasion resistance issues at all. 832 solves that issue as far as i'm concerned.

It's quite annoying, I agree.

If you tone down the size it would be better!

On topic - I used high vis yellow Spider Thread braid on a clear lake.  Here is my take.

1.  I found I had less strikes on a spinnerbait with just tying it straight.  As soon as I put a 10 lb floro leader on the braid my strikes went up dramatically.

2.  On top water it really didn't matter, didn't notice a huge difference.

3.  Texas rigged a senko straight to my high vis yellow braid, I didn't have much luck.  As soon as I put again a floro leader, I started catching fish.

I am not sure if this was all coincidence or just darned luck, I had two setups  with the high vis yellow braid - 1 with straight braid and the other 10lb floro leader.  I decided after getting skunked basically doing straight, I added a leader and my "catching" was better.  In the beginning I was in the camp "It didn't matter", still am with stained/muddy, but I'm a believer now in clear water, you must use a leader. On my local lake which is stained, I used straight high vis and never had an issue.

dodgeguy, I've been skipping reading your posts because of the font. Something tells me I am not the minority here.
