redboat Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Ever thrown a $200-$300 rod? Yes. I can tell little difference and I doubt you can either. On the other hand it is very easy to tell the difference between three $100 rods and one $300 rod. 1 Quote
Christian M Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Ive got 2 Veritas rods, a 7'MH and a 7'6"MH and I love them both. Abu Garcia's customer service is top notch. Just remember the Veritas rods are underrated. My MH rods feel more like Heavy action rods, which is ok because I use them for jigging/froggin/and C-riggin. I'd say go for the Veritas 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 18, 2013 Super User Posted September 18, 2013 I have a 1st gen revo-s, and have never had any problem with it. Seems to be a good solid reel. 2 Quote
Cgrinder Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I feel the need to mention that sensitivity is subjective. Everyone has a different opinion. As a bank fisherman, I prefer a $300 rod over three $100 rods. No need for sweeping generalizations. 1 Quote
GuruDeLaBass Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I just recently went to pick out a new set up from Bass Pro. I was really stuck on which rod I wanted and which reel I wanted as well. I wound up going with the Abu Garcia revo S 3rd gen (Newest out) and putting it on a 6'6 MF Duckett micro magic rod. To be honest I absolutely love the set up. I bought an Abu Garcia Silver Max as my first bait casting reel. It did the job but after months of hard use it got sluggish. I called the manufacturer and they offered for me to send it back and they would replace it if they could not repair it. So all in all I think Abu is a good company to go with, I've had good luck with it. Hope it helps! 1 Quote
Grantman83 Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I'm a bank fisherman and prefer higher end stuff when possible. Since my access is so limited, I want the best stuff so I can feel everything and cast where I need to. Rather have one good rod that can do some of everything which to me is a better investment than 3 rods which aren't as sensitive, don't have the actions and tapers I want etc. Back on topic, Abu customer service has been spot in when I needed it. However, there's was the only rod I have owned which snapped bringing in a fish. My higher end stuff has never had an issue like that. Kind of a chicken or the egg argument. Is the customer service good because they know their stuff is going to fail? Or is it good just because it is good? Quote
zwhiten12 Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I purchased the veritas and revo s back in the spring and I have had 0 complaints with its functioning. Its a very versatile combo and gets the job done! But, if you happen to care about looks, the chrome on the thumb bar wears out and turns a pinkish color within the first couple months, at least for me it did. Also, that was with me fishing 4-5 days a week, hope this helps! 1 Quote
Super User CWB Posted September 18, 2013 Super User Posted September 18, 2013 As some one who has, and uses both Veritas's, and Mojo's. The Mojo's are in no way better. They both have the pros and cons. The Veritas is lighter, and better balanced. The Mojo is made better, and has a longer (5yrs on the Mojo vs. 3yrs on the Abu) warranty. Both fish fine, sensitivity is very subjective, both are plenty sensitive.Agreed. My crankin setup is a 7' Veritas Winch Medium with an STX and I love it. Most of my other rods are 7' Veritas M or MH. I get them from Ebay for $79.00 shipped new with receipt and warranty. Can't beat that price. Light, sensitive rods. Picked up a Mojo Bass and put it right back down. Just didn't feel right. I do have a few Premiers I like. 1 Quote
Bass Junkie Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Yes. I can tell little difference and I doubt you can either. On the other hand it is very easy to tell the difference between three $100 rods and one $300 rod. I can. It's as simple as that, I don't really know how else to put it. Obviously a few other guys can as well I am in no way saying that just because a rod costs more it is superior. But there is a reason they cost more, and many of them do perform better. I've thrown a Duckett, they truly are a really nice rod, and are sensitive and light. But compare that to a rod featuring say SVF graphite. There is a very distinct difference. Quote
dougie511 Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 I havea Revo and a Lews speed spool. My Revo is much smoother then the Lews and cast much further. I like the Lews but the Revo is better in my opinion. I wonder if the Lews Tournement Speed Spool is that much better? ive been wondering the same thing lol Quote
dougie511 Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Thank you guys so much for all the input this far im really pumped on everything ive heard and liked a few comments on here that were helpful and what not! I now have a better insight and def some new places to look for things and different options for rods that i didnt have before so thanks to all of you!!! Im still open to more ideas because it will be a few weeks before i purchase anything so keep them coming if you want!! Quote
theflyingbassfisherman Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I have four different Veritas rods for different baits. I absolutely love mine, especially my veritas winch model 7 footer. It's an amazing crankbait rod. And Abu's customer service is second to none. I snapped one of mine by snagging it and then the dang wind pushed my boat over it before I could get to the trolling motor. Abu had a brand new one on my doorstep in two days. The sensitivity on them is great and they don't weigh hardly anything. However....so far as reels are concerned I would go with Lew's. I don't know what your budget is but I've got two of their 100 dollar speed spools and I love them. So much that I'm thinking of replacing my two 130 dollar Revo S's with them. I've been having some problems with the centrifugal brake in the Revo S reels. I haven't had a chance to send them to Abu yet. But like said I've had no problems out of my Veritas rods, I love them. I will say however they are a bit stiffer than other rods of the same power and speed. I fish a lot of heavy grass though so its all about your preferences. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 23, 2013 Super User Posted September 23, 2013 Only own 2 Abu rods...both Villains. Liked the ML spinning rod, so picked up a 7'6" MH casting rod at a good price. Don't care for it. Another rod in the $100 range I can highly recommend is the Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth series. Have a couple and the 6'10" MF is a very versatile rod. Pair it with a light reel. Abu reels constitute the 2nd highest number of reels I own (behind Daiwa), yet I don't have a Revo S or SX. The majority of my Abu reels are round reels. Personally I would be looking for a Gen 2 STX or Premier. Both of mine happen to be Gen 1. I would put either up against my Lews Tournament Pro for casting distance anytime. The Lews is a nice reel, I just don't see it being the end-all reel some hype the Lews to be. Maybe I have been using magnetic only reels too long. 2 Quote
Dramer77 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 id look into a *** *** black 7'1" MH -F and a lews BB1... if your looking in the price range of the revo SX the lews is a much better reel IMO Quote

Blues19 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I have a Revo S on a 7' MH Veritas and I love the combo. If I had to go back and spend the money again I would get the same gear. I love it. I would reccomend getting the Abus. I was on the fence because of the breakage of the Veritas, but mine has been strong for the first 8 months and it feels great. I have not used any of the other reels in your post so I cant compare, but I am very happy with my purchase. 1 Quote
Ojurb Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Ive had a Revo S on a field&stream tec-spec medium extra fast rod for 3 years and I really like this set up , I mostly just run it with a texas rig since thats the most productive lure in the lake. I love my Revo S! It never failed me and its easy to break down for maintenance. My first baitcaster is an Abu silver max that I still have and its been mated with All Star Select MH Fast rod with 50 pound braid for frogging, I have pulled in a fair share of bass that tried to hide in the weeds and pads with a good chunk of those weeds; gain never any issues. I got the Revo S and the All Star Rod in a combo from Dick's for $99 on sale about a month later I got the Tec-Spec Rod also from Dicks on sale for $50 Ive been out of the Loop for a year and rarely fishing so I havent really looked and current prices. But now that I moved to the River and have a Canoe im getting back into fishing more often. You can get a good deal if you Shop around and sometimes you can just luck out on a deal, I was on a budget and was streching It to upgrade my rod, walked into the store with the intent to buy an Abu Garcia Vendetta, and i got the tec spec simply cause after inspecting both rods, the only advantage I could find in the vendetta was the looks. The Tech spec was lighter and better balanced with the Revo S reel on it and half the price at the time. 1 Quote
