Super User bigbill Posted September 15, 2013 Super User Posted September 15, 2013 I went out fishing today and I wanted to put more time in practicing with my bait casting reel setup. I can cast my bait caster up to about 15yds now. With a 3/8oz spinner bait. I'm not sure if that's good or bad? I know the bait caster setup will never match the casting distance of a spinning outfit. I been planning on using my bait casting setups for my spinnerbaits and jigs so far. I'm thinking one spinning setup for the lighter inline spinners and smaller spinnerbaits. What's the smallest, lightest lure that you can throw using a bait caster setup? Bb Quote

Bb A typical cast with a bait caster when properly adjusted and rod and line matched to the bait in use and power and action of the rod is somewhere between 30-40 yards, with exceptions to every rule. I have no problem matching distance with a spinning reel, when baits above a 1/4oz are being used. Once you go below a 1/4oz, spinning reels get the edge unless you are willing to spend the money required to purchase a BC reel capable of throwing lighter baits. Quote
Arv Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 A lot of casting distance has to do with the rod and line as well. I was able to throw weightless plastics pretty comfortably on my CU51e with a Dobyns Champ 702c. I will admit that I am more comfortable with the lighter stuff on a spinning reel though. But there are definitely bc set ups that you could put together that will handle light lures quite well. Quote
RandySBreth Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 It's a balance thing - heavy lures are easy to throw on casting gear, but to throw very light stuff far spinning is the way to go. For anything above 1/4-ounce and if distance isn't a big thing just keep on with the casting gear. Just keep fishing and more distance will come. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 15, 2013 Author Super User Posted September 15, 2013 Ok one dumb question, Before you cast with a bait caster do you make sure the level line winder is in the middle of the width of the spool? Bigbill Quote
Super User Marty Posted September 15, 2013 Super User Posted September 15, 2013 I don't think a generalization can be made regarding the casting distance between the two types of reels. My friend with baitcasting regularly casts considerably further than I do with spinning, using the same lures. It's been years since I used baitcasters but back then I noticed that casting distances could be very good with them. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted September 16, 2013 Author Super User Posted September 16, 2013 I was using my Chinese bait caster today. I just purchased a quantum code red. I need another rod setup to try it out too. This brake design isn't a magnetic system. It appears to be a sort of fly weight setup. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Me too in general I can cast farther with baitcaster except for really little baits which I don't use. I can comfortably wamm-it the baitcaster, but with spinning I feel a bit awkward, something with the finger holding the line. I never measured how long I am actually casting. Quote
einscodek Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 In my limited experience with baitcasters, when I'm not birdsnested, I just cant see how any of you can match distance of a spinning outfit with those multiple brakes.. sure freespooling I could see maybe.. how many of you are that good you can freespool all the time? Baitcasters generally have more guides and smaller guides .. more friction guide-wise on the way out. Spinning rods have less guides and are generally bigger.. less friction on the way out. The only major thing impeding a spinning line is the lip on the spool and most are contoured these days towards the rod tip. A baitcaster also has a small oscillating guide (or whatever its called) at the reel where theres contact as well.. and thats a small hole. As for lure weight, that a generalization since most freshwater spinning setups aren't usually heavy.. the saltwater surf-fishin guys use alot of heavy spinning setups to chuck huge baits afar .. so it is done certainly. We're only talkin distance here.. Quote

Bb Keep practicing. 15 yds with 3/8 oz. is short. Lightest so far with baitcaster is 1/8 oz. Roostertail. Just tried it Saturday. Accuracy is pretty bad. 3/16 oz. is much more accurate. I need practice, too. Quote

TiNuts Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Ok one dumb question,Before you cast with a bait caster do you make sure the level line winder is in the middle of the width of the spool? Bigbill I did actually try this out in the street once. I did several casts setting the levelwind in the center vs leaving it wherever it stopped and I didn't notice any kind of difference in distance or casting effort. Certainly not a difference worth the trouble of centering it each cast. I did even line it up on the extreme edges on either side. Quote

I'm thinking one spinning setup for the lighter inline spinners and smaller spinnerbaits. What's the smallest, lightest lure that you can throw using a bait caster setup? Bb Casting distance records are achieved with BAITCASTING reels, so it´s the other way around, spinning reels will never match the distance you can achieve with a baitcasting reel. How far can you casts depends upon several factors, spinnerbaits have very high air resistance so in practical terms in figurative speaking it´s like casting a kite, they won´t travel very far. The tricky part of your question, what´s the smallest and lightest lure I can cast with a baitcaster setup is tricky because you are not asking the length & power rating of the rod you are interested to use and also you are not asking the line test you are interested to use. With the right rod balanced properly with the right line test you can cast very light offerings at good distances. With my CR721 ( 6´ L power ), 6 lbs test Trilene XT , I can cast a 1 3/4 inch grub & 1/0 hook 30 yards away with my Chronarch 50 mg or Alphas ( which are mainstream reels anybody can have ) add 10 yards more if I cast with my Pixy. 1 Quote
