qp_iGniTe_qp1301600405 Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 I am looking to start throwing jigs more often but don't know too much about them. I just have a couple of questions for you guys: 1) What are the purposes between the different types of jigs. 2) Are Black Angel Jigs a good brand to use? And any tips for a new jig thrower would be great, Thanks. Quote

Pikesnogle Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 check out this thread started a few days ago.http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1281044856 In particular check out riverrat's write up. It it very informative. He also makes the best jigs! That is a great post. I will be remembering that the next time I buy hooks. I like strike king jigs. I do not have a problem with the Gammie hooks rolling as he said, I always loose the jigs before it gets to that point. I like to jig fish in heavy cover, that means a lot of lost jigs. Unfortunate, but the way that I fish it is a reality. Are you looking for the "proper" way to fish them as well? I say "proper" because there will be a multitude of responses for that question. There is a post from a little while back, I will try to find it and post it back so you can read it. It was a great post on how to use jigs. Quote

qp_iGniTe_qp1301600405 Posted August 18, 2010 Author Posted August 18, 2010 Thanks guys. I just have one more question though. How do you determine when to use a certain type of jig? Or do they all do the job and is it just prefrence? Thanks. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 18, 2010 Super User Posted August 18, 2010 football heads when you want the bait to "stand up" Swim jigs when you want to swim them through grass etc. Quote
qp_iGniTe_qp1301600405 Posted August 18, 2010 Author Posted August 18, 2010 I guess that kind of anwsers my question... Quote
SJB1226 Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Black angel jigs are very good jigs I really like them and have caught tons and tons of fish on them.. the skirts and paint on the head last forever and the weed guard does its job keeps it pretty weedless and allows easy hookups. for the price they are stellar because they are top grade jigs and come two to a pack for 6.50 to 7.50 Dirty jigs is my fav jig.. I believe it has the best flaring skirt of any jig ive seen.. I know my jigs I fish jigs (Pitching and flipping, Casting and swimming) probably 65% of all my time on the water. pitching is my fav way to catch em... I Love pitching to holes in Heavy cover.. I just plain love to Jig fish.. The Gman Jig is Stellar as well but still believe the Dirty Jigs are the best and I catch most of my fish on them (But I fish them the most to) I have 300-400 jigs probably or all different brands and customs So I have used most and know all the good ones well. All jigs will catch fish its just the subtle differences in them that make them or break them and the main difference is how the skirt flares.. Quote
Pikesnogle Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Are you asking what color to use and when? Because that depends on the conditions. Water clarity, weather and such. I like green, black and brown jigs. Natural colors are usually good. But guys catch fish on a lot of different colors. Those are just the colors that I like to throw. I have a lot of confidence in them so those are the ones that I like to use. Quote
qp_iGniTe_qp1301600405 Posted August 19, 2010 Author Posted August 19, 2010 Like I said I am new to jigs, so what I really want to konw is what are the diferrences between a Casting jig, Flipping jig, Football jig, etc. Quote
Big Bass Chaser Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 A football jig shines where it won't get buried by weeds and has rocks to bang into. Almost all of my bites come near rocks or timber. I tend to favor natural colors. Flipping jigs in heavy weeds or floating wood as they come through the cover better. I tend to favor dark natural colors. I fish swimjigs along weed lines, drop offs, and where I can kill it into openings in weed beds. I like at least a little white or chartreuse in my swim jig to really get their attention. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted August 19, 2010 Super User Posted August 19, 2010 I am nowhere near proficient in fishing a jig but I have come to learn a few things about them. The biggest misconception I had was that jigs are heavy baits that need to be thrown on heavy tackle, you hear alot of talk about flipping 3/4-1oz jigs on a 7'6''H rod. Once I realized that a 1/4-5/16oz jig is still a jig and gets a jig bite, it all changed for me and throwing jigs. I rarely throw above 1/2oz jigs, my favorite right now are Booyah Boo Jigs and Boo Bugs and SK Bitsy Flips and Bitsy Bugs. I really like round ball head finesse jigs, they may be small but they can throw a big profile. I also used to think you needed a big, bulky, craw trailer but I have come to like the ragetail baby craws, paca chunks, and things like the Zoom grass craw (craw imitating plastics that add image and a little bulk but not much action). It's all different for everyone, I like a smaller, finesse type profile, spider jigs and the such. Once you actually go out and try it, it should click, eventually. Quote
BlaineFred Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 It gets even more complex when fishing finesse jigs for smallmouths...hair jigs are preferred. then there's swim jigs, and Arkie jigs...and jigs with rattles, and those without. Furthermore, there must be hundreds of jig manufacturers...all it takes is a mold and some lead and some skirt material. Personally, I like Kietech, Jewell, Strike King, and Bass Pro Shops. Jig fishing is much different from crankbait or worm fishing...hits can be very subtle...big bass could be on your line, and running away with the jig, and you may not feel anything at all...just see your line moving.
