pbizzle Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Now we can obviously tell that the cabelas prodigy b is made by daiwa. It even has magforce z brakes and a free floating spool. Now are there any other reels that are sold like this? I'd love to find a revo for a $100 just because it said cabelas. Quote
Tony L. Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 My grandfather, whom i credit for starting me into this beautiful addiction known as fishing, once told me that the some of "house brand" reels sold at gander mountain stores are actually manufactured by pflueger. I am not sure if this is true or if he was just joking around. I live nowhere near a gander mountain store, and I have never taken the time to research this, but I still remember him telling me that several years ago, and it has always stuck out in my mind. JD96 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Shimano reels are infact made by Shimano. 3 Quote

I'm about % 95 sure some of them are. Atleast the spinning reels. They very closely resemble them. Quote

I believe that they are, and I think that bass pro reels used to be. But they aren't as blatantly obvious as the prodigy. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 13, 2013 Super User Posted September 13, 2013 That new Chinese bait caster reel I been playing with looks similar to a Garcia bait caster reel. Either they cloned it or manufactured it for Garcia then went out on there own after they got the machinery and the experience. I have two exactly the same spinning reels, the parts are interchangeable. One says Okuma on it while the other says Viva on it. I'm not sure who made what but there both the same exact reel down to even the color too. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted September 14, 2013 Super User Posted September 14, 2013 Generally speaking, China isn't shy about copying other companies' stuff so it would be no great shock to hear this is taking place in the fishing industry. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted September 14, 2013 Super User Posted September 14, 2013 Just because they are made by the same company doesn't mean it is the same quality. A lot of times the quality of the parts are not the same even if they are made to the same tolerances. 1 Quote

I have no idea what he's talking about (must have missed a thread) but I'm not scared to buy anything that's Cabela's house brand. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted September 14, 2013 Super User Posted September 14, 2013 @Bill- Okuma and Viva are the same company. Okuma is one of the largest OEM manufacturers of spinning and conventional reels. They're marketed under about five different names. BPS reels aren't made by Pflueger, nor are Gander. Pflueger doesn't make Pflueger reels. They're made at the same factory in Korea on very similar lines, in some cases the exact same production lines. Don't kid yourself into thinking Pflueger makes reels- Pure Fishing doesn't "own" a manufacturing facility for any of their reels. Outside of Ardent, Shimano, Daiwa, and several other very small outfits, they're all made at one of three factories in Korea, or one of four in China. Quote
