Do you guys and gals buy reel parts from the manufacturer?

I have an older Shakespeare bait caster reel that needs one of the long thumb screws many models use this same screw. I contacted Shakespeare to see if I could purchase this screw. I purchased this reel brand new but the screw is missing. It's been a week now with no answer yet. Even a response of sorry it's too old would be ok. But no response at all tells me they could care less. What if I had a problem with a brand new product of there's. I'd be rippin if I had a new Shakespeare reel and received no answer from them. They don't think about the world wide web uniting all us fisherman and fisherwomen now?

So do you purchase reel parts from your manufacturer? And who is it?

The only companies I dealt with so far are Zebco, Penn and D.A.M. Quick for reel parts and they were awesome to deal with. I figured that Shakespeare being a big company would be ok to deal with but not even a return email. Sad isn't it? Bigbill

Bill, the only companies I have dealt with for parts has been Daiwa and Pflueger.  Ordered a couple spools from Japan, and a thumb bar from Pflueger.  Parts were delivered in a timely manner.  I got emails from both.  In fact the Japan company emailed me 3-4 times helping me decide which spool would work best in my Sol for finesse fishing.

That's what I'm talking about they should of answered me by now.

Being a retired lead engineering tech for Otis Elevator World wide engineering headquarters when my son's Kawasaki dirtbike kept on blowing the needle bearing on one of the transmission shafts. I noticed the thrust washer was covering the needle bearing stopping the oil flow to it. It would heat up and decintergrate. I contacted Kawasaki engineering and made them aware of the problem under severe use(racing hare scrambles) this failure would occur. I even gave them the solution on how to fix it. They needed to put oil grooves in the side of the case so they could feed oil to the bearing. I did this on my son's bike and we haven't had a problem since. The people at Kawasaki seemed very interested in the problem. They returned my emails right away.

All I'm saying is some companies care and some don't but my previous work title does open up doors and get there attention. Bigbill

My Dad buys pawls from Abu by the truckload.  He goes through 2 or 3 each season.

What is the model number on your reel? Get a schematic and find the part number for the screw. Try Mike's Reel Repair, they might have what your looking for.

I haven't dealt with Shakespeare for several years, but when I did, their service was exemplary.

bigbill,

yes I do by from the factory. But only factories that support independant service (ie Garcia, Daiwa, Shimano, etc.)... :Victory:

Shakespeare is propriatery and only supports their satelight servce centers, direct contact is usually futile...

I would recommend you contact Outdoor World Rod & Reel Repair (BPS), they are a warrenty center for Shakespeare and probably have the part/s you need in stock...

Nothing to lose by contacting them...

you can also try contacting pure fishing directly (shakespeare is pure fishing brand, along with abu-garcia, penn and pflueger, among others). i've had good luck in the past ordering abu and pflueger parts by calling them at (712) 336-1520.

Thanks my last email was sent at pure fishing. I kept it civil but to the point. I can't purchase a product were we don't get the support when it comes to parts. It may seem to be a small thing with just a screw but I picked up other used Shakespeare reels that need a thumb friction knob. Plus I have another one they should inspect for product reliability problems. There's nothing like seeing the problems from actual use in the field from the end product user.

I have one Shakespeare alpha bait caster that has seen heavy use from fishing that still functions but the glue on the spool to hold the metal disc for the magnetic brake didn't hold up. It allowed the metal disc to float ruining the plating on the magnets. Otherwise the reel is still functioning. I'm surprised these companies aren't interested in the feed back from us the end product user. There is no other way for a fair lifetest then us using it. Bb

Lots of reels and reel.parts are absolete.cost more to make parts for a 12 dollar reel then the reel itself.not a good business move.

I just realized that. I purchased another new bait caster and three more used one's. One works awesome while the others are parts reels.(backup parts) But it's cheaper to purchase better reels. I'm just thick headed.

Bill,, some day you need to try a quality reel and you may find it is Much,,,,Cheaper, More Reliable, and Catches more Fish, making it a much better buy, you will have more time to fish making your time more productive, and less time spent looking for savings, and no time spent trying to keep em running. This alone makes the better reels today a bargain!! They usually perform amazingly better also!! M.02,,,, :thumbsup1:

Yup you guys are correct. I need to step up to the higher priced reels now. It's time not to be frugal.

I was thinking of putting two rod setups with some lures in both of my cars so I can stop anywhere to fish when I get the itch to try a different spot or I'm near to a local hot spot. The cheaper used reels would be the way to go. Now I'm thinking a $5/$9 rod, a low cost spinning and a bait caster setup in each car would be awesome. Maybe four Chinese reels would do it. I figure a spinner bait in white and one in chartreuse, some bomber cranks, a Carolina rig(senko, brushog, worms, creature baits), a topwater spook and frog, an inline spinner and some joesfly, plus some scents.

Just incase anyone was thinking what the heck is bigbill thinking? There are positive thoughts behind my madness. Sometimes.

As far as bait caster reels go I just ordered a $99 quantum code red bait caster on sale for $54 @ fishandsave the sale is still on. I found the code red in the spincast section hiding there.
