sarcazmo Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Did a search here and tackle underground and couldnt find any specifics. Are there any molds available that feature double weed guards? I'd like to try my hand at pouring some arky and football style jigs with a double wire weed guard. Thank you. Quote
cadman Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I haven't seen any molds like the one you are describing available to the public. They are custom made molds. Quote
RandySBreth Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I wanted a double wire weedguard grub head in 1/8 or 3/16 so all I did was take the weedguard pin for the casting jig mold and cut it off so it would be flush with the edge of the cavity, and I also sanded it down so there would be enough space for the wires to sit up beside the pin. No need to modify the mold, just the pin. I need to take a picture of the mold and pin, but I think you get what I mean. Maybe an easier way would be to buy a regular mold (no weedguard) and cut a very small slot for the wires. I think I'd do it that way. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 Very easy to do with any weedless jig mold, if you want to make your own wire weedguard or use the ones at Lure Parts Online and not the ones made for the wacky jig either since they are too thin. Anyway, grab a rubber skirt collar put the first weedguard in the opening followed by the second, next you line up the weedguard with how much you want coming out and where you want them inside the head. Place the skirt collar right where the weedguard slot meets the head and close the mold and hold tightly and then pour, you my get a tiny amount of smoke but nothing really. When you remove your jig you can just break off the sprue and remove the rubber collar and then bend the wire in the position you want, it also works with a single wire. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 You could also simply bend the weed guard into a "V" which serves the same purpose. Works especially well with football heads. Quote
cadman Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Do apologize. I didn't read the original thread carefully. Thought he wanted (2) separate wire weedguards like the "Headknocker" Jigs. My error. Quote
sarcazmo Posted September 9, 2013 Author Posted September 9, 2013 I did mean two separate holes for two wire weed guards. I haven't purchased any molds yet so I'm having difficulty picturing some of the mods you guys are referring to. I'm especially curious to try this in a football jig application. Quote
RandySBreth Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 I like SmallJaws rubber "lead stopper" idea - hadn't thought of that.Sorry about the lack of pictures sarcazmo - maybe I'll get time to do them this weekend and clarify some of our idea's. Quote
sarcazmo Posted September 10, 2013 Author Posted September 10, 2013 No problem I appreciate the help. I'm trying to get a shopping list of everything I'll need. Quote
cadman Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Ha ha, now that is weird, I must be a mind reader. So you want a football mold that has two separate weedguard holes to accept two wire weedguards like the "Headknocker" jig I mentioned above? Well as far as I know there isn't a mold available that you can buy without having it custom made. Honestly, no offense to the original manufacturer of that jig, but as unique as that jig is, I find that a double weedguard like that really serves no purpose other than collect more weeds. JMO. However what the guys above are trying to tell you is that you can put in two pieces of wire in the hole where the original weedguard is supposed to go and pour it in place. Once it cools, you can then separate the two pieces of wire to form a "V". Also you can buy plastic weedguards that are formed in a "Y and glue them in place. If you PM me your e-mail, I can send you some pics tonight. 1 Quote

sarcazmo Posted September 10, 2013 Author Posted September 10, 2013 Hard to see but is something like that what you guys are referring to? Quote
cadman Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I can't tell from your pic, but I think we're all on the same page. I have attached two pics. The picture on the left shows two wires, poured in a mold without a weedguard hole, however you can do this the same as with a weedguard hole as mentioned by Smalljaw. This mold happened to have a groove cut on both mold halves to allow for the fit of the wires. The picture on the right shows a premade "Y" weedguard that you can buy and mold in or glue into your jig. backwater4 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Just use coated seven strand fishing wire. Make sure you get a heavy enough wire, cut it double it and glue it in the hole where the fiber guard goes. Then separate. I 've been doing it for 10 years this way. Quote
