DDuno Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I recently got permission to fish on a private pond, I always see plenty of bass swimming around and other people fishing and catching Bass and Bream. I'm trying to start a new tackle box, as I've only been bass fishing a few times. How does this look? I plan on going to my local sporting good store and looking at soft bait and hooks. Are these lures okay or am I wasting my money? Any tips would be great. Thanks, Damian. Quote
BenBassmaster Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I don't know about Shimano's lower end rods, but the Pfluger President is definitely worth the money. I've heard good thing about Hi Seas Line, cheap and it works well. Planos boxes are great, but if you want to save some money get Flambou's boxes they are cheaper. Unless you want the thin boxes to save space. I like all Rapala lures its just some of the lures are very expensive. Bomber and Norman make some good cranks that are cheaper and work well. That way of you buy some of the Bombers you can get some more stuff. Hope this helps! Quote
DDuno Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 Great thanks, Ill check those out. What about soft bait, any suggestions? Also, What other rods are there for around the $50 range? Quote

I like the Zoom Finese Worm, Brush Hawg, Yum Dinger, and Berkley Havoc Pit Boss, and Devil Spear. I have a Berkley Lightning Rod Shock ($40) it's pretty good for the money, Diawa has a $50 rod called the Arrid, a friend of mine has one and he really likes it. Quote
Super User Marty Posted September 8, 2013 Super User Posted September 8, 2013 I'd probably prefer the President 6935 for use with 10# line. All other things being equal, a larger spool will handle line better and the 6935 is by no means too large a reel. Quote

ClackerBuzz Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 bass fishing in private ponds is a blast. no need to drop a bunch of money on hard lures w/ treble hooks. they snag very easily and there is no way to retrieve them from shore (unless you like to snorkel:). you can cast a shiny bottle cap w/ a hook at those fish will likely take it. $2 spinnerbaits will get the job done just as well and they don't snag near as easily. jigs are great too (both have a single stout hook facing upward). cheap 5" worms will be a crowd pleaser. when i'm pond fishing i fit everything in an old school fanny pack. check the hunting section for $12 camo ones. spinnerbaits are a fast/reaction/vibration lure and you'll do well this fall. jigs can be dead sticked, or add slow 12" drags keeping bottom contact, or light 6" hops. sometimes they just like you to steadily swim it back. very versatile lure. 5" worms just have a beautiful slow rate of fall that the fish just love. rigged wacky or texas. texas is better from shore b/c they don't snag. good luck! 1 Quote
kingkong85 Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 For soft baits there are zoom flukes, lunker city slugo, yamamoto senkos (or something similar). Your list looks good. I have a lower end shimano spinning combo for trouts. Had it for 5 years or more now and still have it. It's been a great rod and I still use it for trouts or other small fishes. As long as you take care of it, the gear should last a long time. FYI, do maintenance on the reel(s). Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 DDuno, you have asked an open end question as all of the guys have their favorite rods, reels, line, baits, etc. You decide what you want to purchase as starter equipment and go out and have some fun. Now, your goal over the winter is to do the following so make a list: 1. Add your physical location to your avatar so we will know where you are. Bass fishing differes from geographical location to geographical location. 2. Visit this Forum every day and read the posts. 3. Suscribe to bass magazines such as Bass Anglers Magazine and Bass Times. 4. Join BASS and/or FLW to receive their monthly magazines. 5. When reading articles from the pros leave out the manufacturers's names. So when VanDam says to use an AbuGarcia 7-foot medium heavy spinning rod you read it as a 7-foot medium heavy spinning rod. The manufacturer is of no concern to you unless you really like to get with the pros are hawking. 6. Subscribe and view as many of the BassResource YouTube productions. Glenn is down to earth and honest and he is not selling anything. You will learn a lot. 7. Watch the Sunday bass fishing shows on TV. 8. Go to your favorite pros' web pages and see if they have any tips. Woo Daves and Hank Parker have some good tips. 9. Order a free Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's catalogs and read every page. Select the items you want on your Christmas list and give it to your family members. 10. Look for some good DVDs on baits and techniques. 11. Ask us questions and get ready to be bombarded with different responses. 12. Consider joining a bass club in your area that allows nonboaters to join and learn from those guys while on the water and at their meetings. We are here to share information and look forward to your queries and your input as well. Tight Lines. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 One last thing. Go to BassResource's YouTube videos and look for the one on spooling a spinning reel. Follow Glenn's instructions. Quote
