Super User roadwarrior Posted September 8, 2013 Super User Posted September 8, 2013 I have to put myself on "Injured Reserve" for a month or so. I have developed a bad case of fishing elbow. A few weeks ago we got into a big striper bite throwing a custom built bait ball which is a gigantic A-rig. The combination of casting this big rig and getting slammed by 20+ pound fish has taken its toll. I tried to push through it, but that isn't working. The fall smallmouth bite will kick into full gear around the middle of October and I want to be ready. No more fishing until then. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted September 8, 2013 Super User Posted September 8, 2013 Been there... and still am. Fisherman elbow is the worse. After a year and half, I am able to get ahead of it. I have learned to adapt and recognized my limitations. Rest, ice, stretch, light dumbbell rehab work for the wrists. Best of luck, if you want more advice you can always PM me. Quote
wnybassman Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 It will take you longer than a month to recover. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted September 8, 2013 Super User Posted September 8, 2013 Tendinitis of any type is an overuse injury and they only way to get completely healed is total rest and not just until you feel better. Good luck though and if you take it easy you can probably get by fishing the fall bite but then i would lay off as long as you can while keeping your sanity. the other option would be learn to cast with your opposite arm Quote
Big-O Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 lol, a little therapy may be necessary... a good exercise for that is lifting a mug with the injured arm, about chin high a few times in the evening before bed 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 8, 2013 Author Super User Posted September 8, 2013 lol, a little therapy may be necessary... a good exercise for that is lifting a mug with the injured arm, about chin high a few times in the evening before bed Excellent advice! I have talked with a couple of doctors, including my son. They basically said I just have to give it up for awhile. Quote
Lostinthewoods Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I hope you get healed up in time! I've gotta say that hauling in big stripers is at least a good back story for tendonitis. Quote

When mine was hurting I got the same thing and it worked great for me. It isn't restrictive at all either so I had no problem fishing while I was wearing it. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 Excellent advice! I have talked with a couple of doctors, including my son. They basically said I just have to give it up for awhile. I would advise a beer hat rather than a mug. Lifting a mug full of suds will only serve to irritate. But you open two cans, put them in the holders on the hat, and sip away. I suppose you could put the beverage of your choice in place of beer. Therapy..... Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 Dagomit bobby !! so where do you feel pain in your elbow from fish? I fish a lot and never had problem and im a pitcher . I might have to switch and started using a right handed bait caster.. right now I use a lefty so I cast with my right and reel with my left .... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 9, 2013 Author Super User Posted September 9, 2013 It feels like the pain is concentrated at the tip of the bone on the inside of my left elbow. However, the issue is actually with irritated or inflamed tendons. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Not good RW!! I hope you heal up soon so you can get back at it. Quote
VolFan Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 My wife has the same problem on occasion.... ;-) You need to get the lightest combo you can for the fall bite, so that you don't exacerbate the problem. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 You'll have to limit the size of the fish you catch to no larger than 7 lbs. Quote
tholmes Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Bummer, RW. Let me be the first to volunteer to stand in for you when that October smallie bite turns on. Tom Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 You had better rehab per the drs orders. Imagine hooking that 12-1 brownie & not being able to reel her in. 1 Quote
