my wife makes candles and has fragrance oils in the house. I was wondering if adding these scents to a base like worm oil would it work in soft plastic?

Kinda got me thinking that the Grape Shad oil would almost be the same except they probably use a fish oil base with a grape scent.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I know I ll get the smell but I wasn't sure if the oils are ok. I think some use essential oils or extracts for flavoring. The oils she has are fragrance oils for soaps and candles. Is this the same oils used in scenting baits?

There are 2 basic kinds of bait scents.  Some are water based, some are oil based.  I'm familiar with Kickin' Bass, which uses a fish oil base mixed with different scents like garlic, anise, and craw.  Some water based scents claim they disperse in water better than non-soluble oil based scents and so are better attractors.  Oil based scents say they stay on the bait longer and work better when the bait is mouthed by a fish.  Either kind probably masks unnatural odors, another function.  If you are going to mix your own scent from oil, does it matter what kind of oil you use?  Will any kind of non-petroleum oil work as well as another?  Probably but I don't know for sure.

We won't discuss what Dr. Keith Jones says about scent. If you can find the book you will be surprised when you see the various scents the Berkley Pure Fishing research department tested and the results.

I use two basic scents when tournament fishing: MegaStrike and JJ's magic.

Fun fishing I use Bang, Carolina Lunker Sauce and Jack's Juice.

Scent is a matter of confidence. I forgot to bring any scent with me yesterday when I visited my double secret pond and caught 15 without using any scent on Zoom plastics. Go figure?

Zoom plastics are the real deal.

Sam,

Your quote above is 100% true. I have bought some of the more popular scents this year to try out, and although I've used them, I catch just as many fish without them. I was out fishing yesterday and forgot the scent and loaded up on fish. So unfortunately I'm not that convinced that they help. But if it works for you then by all means use it.

I don't think you can do too much hurt with scent if you want to try those oils I say go ahead and see what happens. I do believe in scent but not as an attractor, I use a product called CB's hawg sauce, I won a bottle years ago and never really used it and one day I was out chasing river smallies, the fish were tight to cover with high sun and no clouds, nothing was working. I pull up on a point that had trees over hanging the bank and oe side was sand bottom while the other was chunk rock with large boulders  and deeper water just a cast distance from the bank, this is where the fish should be. I pitched a jig to the bank and it didn't hit bottom before it was bit but I was missing the fish, 3 csts and 3 solid hits but the fish were spitting it as quick as they hit it, I was getting frustrated but then I remembered the scent that I had and figured it couldn't hurt, and it didn't hurt, it saved my day, I ended up getting a 3lb smallie out of the spot and within a 100 yard stretch I boated a dozen more. I don't think the scent attracts the fish but I do believe that scent will keep the fish holding on a bit longer and it has worked for me so I use it on all my jigs and soft plastics but I never use it on moving baits.

It doesn't on most plastics now days most of the time. But I can tell you from experience that if they are spitting out culprit worms before you can set the hook toss some garlic salt in the bag and watch what happens. They want let it go.

Guy I was fishing with one day reached over and sprayed my worm with WD 40 after I had missed like four in a row. Now I don't recommend WD 40 but it must have smelled better then what I had on my hands when I started the day. He made me let the next one run for a long time with it to show me he wouldn't spit it.

Same when senko came out they will swallow it every time due to the salt. Among other things. Weight texture so on.

I agree that scent can make finicky fish hold on longer. I'm not against scent, and I do use it quite a bit. In the colder months I almost exclusively fish with scented soft plastics. I was only commenting on how Zoom plastics are top notch, with or without scent added.

Sorry took u wrong.

I've noticed that too. Hadn't thought about it till it was first brought up here wonder if it sent added to there plastic. Or there plastic just smells better. Kept more sterile maybe.

To make things simple, I used to experiment with scents back in the 70's prior to a lot of scent makers.

For one of my own concoctions, I used to buy a bottle of cod liver oil, the mix anise oil to it.  All fish

based, and it worked, but it stinks to me.  Fish didn't seem to mind it.  Now with all the different scents

so available, I just add a half tablespoon of Kosher salt to the packages we buy.  I mix the salt in

well, and things work great.  I no longer fish tournaments so don't mind giving secrets.

Cheap, just like me.

Dipped into the archives and pulled this one up instead of starting a new thread. My question is: Will a type of grape extract work as a form of Bass attractant when mixed in with some of my other items I use for a carrier and what other product would give me that grape scent I have come to love on those older plastics?
