loudcherokee Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 How do you fish each bait type? Rod tip up, down, or to the side? Spinnerbaits buzzbaits crank baits top water LC Quote
The Young Gun Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 Depends what collum of the water you want your bait in. If I'm trying to get a spinnerbait down I'd definitely keep the rod tip down. But if I want my buzzbait to plane on top of the water right away ill pull my rod tip up. But overall my rod tips are generally down, due to comfortability. Quote
The Young Gun Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 This is definitely a technique oriented question, depending on what your throwing, where, and with what kind of tackle all will be different. 1 Quote
derekxec Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 for the spinnerbaits and crank baits it depends on how deep i want it to go...for the buzzbaits my tip is up a bit and walk the dog style tip down Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 7, 2013 Super User Posted September 7, 2013 I use my rod to guide each of those lures in, around, & through cover. The tip maybe up, down, left, or right. With spinner baits if I'm slow rolling the tip is down but I still guide it left or right. With buzz baits it depends, if i want it to ride high the tip is up, if I want it ride low its down. I also control each with speed Quote

Spinnerbaits-tip down buzzbaits-tip up crank baits-Tip down top water-Tip down LC Really though I just do whatever is comfortable. I like the tip low to give action to a moving lure, so I do that a lot. I keep the tip up on buzzbaits to keep them on the surface. Obviously jigs and worms have the tip up, too. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 8, 2013 Super User Posted September 8, 2013 Loud, it actually depends on the depth you want the bait to travel in the water column. When throwing crankbaits you have to try your retrieve with the rod tip at 11 o'clodk, 9 o'clock and then 7 o'clock. This gets the crankbait to various depths in your search for the pattern. The same applies to spinnerbaits, too. As for buzzbaits, you can hold the rod tip where you are comfortable and you can set the hook. I usually have the rod tip around 10 o'clock but have been known to go lower and point rod tip at the buzzbait. Tip down for topwaters to get good bait reactions to the rod tip's movement. Just food for thought. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 8, 2013 Super User Posted September 8, 2013 Loud, let me also add that if you want your crankbait or spinnerbait to go deeper you can actually put the rod's tip in the water as deed as you want. Quote
wnybassman Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I run tip ups for pike and tip downs for perch...............................on the ice. 1 Quote
lanzbass Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Tip down until the fish is on , and then its tip up... Altho its tip up if I'm using a streamer fly... Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 It depends on the water column and what kind of cover I'm fishing. If I am fishing over weeds I will hold the tip up so that I have better control bringing the bait over the tops of the weeds. How I hold the rod for a crankbait depends on what kind of crank it is and how I want to fish it. Quote
