Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 9, 2013 Super User Posted September 9, 2013 Here's my setup for jigs and Punching up to 3/4oz weights For Finesse Jigs up to 1/4 oz I go to spinning 6'6" MH Spinning 10lb PowerPro Braid 12lb Seaguar Invizx Leader. What rod is this? What is the low end rating? Are you using trailers? I bought a Villain ML spinning rod rated 1/8 oz. on the low end. Planned on using it as my panfish rod. Figured it would be no problem throwing 1/16 or less. I mean it is a spinning rod after all. No dice. Rod wouldn't load and distance was dismal. I do have an older Fenwich HMG with the same low end rating. The seller said it would handle down to 1/16 oz. This is a baitcast rod. I've only gone down to 3/16 oz. so far, so can't verify his statement. Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 11, 2013 Super User Posted September 11, 2013 Thanks for the replies right now i like using yum crawbugs with a 1/8 oz weighted worm hook, using it with 30lb braid on a procaster spinning rod rated for 1/8 - 3/4oz 6-14lb line also have a fenwick walleye class medium casting rod and a veritas 7ft mh with revo sx i mostly use for trolling and crainkbaits / spinnerbaits but am debating using one or both for jigging as well. am using them both with 10 and 12 lb mono. should i put braid on one of my casters and jig with it? if so what lb line I am not a fan of using spinning rod/reel combo for casting and retrieving bass jigs because it's difficult to keep in touch with jig by using rod feedback alone. There are a few exceptions to that are lightvweight dart and shaky head jigs that weigh 1/8 oz or less. You are currently fishing a T-rig with craw trailer using a keel weighted hook and your tackle maybe OK for that type of presentation. The problem with a walleye action rod is the action is slower than a faster action bass worm/ jig rod and lacks the needed quick hook setting power. Your bait casting reel is OK if it is a good smooth operating reel. What you need is a good well balanced worm/jig rod. For general use a 7' medium heavy (4 power) fast action bait casting rod rated for 1/4-1 oz lures, 15-20 lb line. I don't know what budget limits you may have, good rods are in the $150 to $500+ range. The more expensive rods have top quality components, life time warranty, exceptional customer service and weigh about 4 oz or less. I use both Lamiglas and ALX custom rods and recommend looking at ALX off the self Zolo-B series OBC-4-85F. Quote
fishguy613 Posted September 11, 2013 Author Posted September 11, 2013 thanks WRB i purchased a fenwick smallmouth casting rod 6'10 medium action fast tip, its rated a bit light 1/8-5/8 was going to use it for crankbaits but may use it to jig still very new to setting up rods properly, am pretty overwhelmed lol Quote

5dollarsplash Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 That would be a great 1/4 to 3/8 oz jig rod if the cover is moderate to sparse. It does a nice job in the rivers in my area. I was sorely tempted to pick one up, but I managed to beat the bait monkey off for a little while longer. My friend has 3 of the Fenwick smallmouth rods, and has the same one that fishguy613 bought. Does great with a 1/4 or bitsy flip with a smaller trailer like a single tail grub. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted September 11, 2013 Super User Posted September 11, 2013 I have that exact same rod and definitely you can use it for those weights, I usually fish finesse (light jigs) and flukes with it. Also pretty good with 5" Senkos. Quote
fishguy613 Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 thanks alot i used the rod today paired with a abu revo sx with 14 lb trilene xt green mono i really liked it, tried crankbait, lipless crankbait and spinnerbait all worked very well. casted great, had perfect action and i felt confident in the setup. got a decent pike was 25" about 4 pounds will try jigging with it tomorrow and see how i like it Quote
