Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 3, 2013 Super User Posted September 3, 2013 When Gary Dobyns talked me out of a Champion Extreme for my Tube/Rage Rigs and recommended the Champion 733, I was left with ok? Your the boss and I know nothing about your rods, so ok! He was right, the 733 is the perfect blend between a MF and a MHF rod. This rod feels amazing. This is my first Dobyns and first rod this high end. Cork is amazing. I've got a 745 DX on the way too, so I'm even more excited! I took my 50E off my top water rod to see how it felt. I need a new 50E for my top water rod now lol. 1 Quote
The Young Gun Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Isn't is cool how every pro knows their equipment so well? Like they know every rod reel line on each and use for each one Quote
Grantman83 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Great rod choices! You won't be diassapointed 1 Quote

motodmast Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 wait till you get the DX745, i have it and man what a rod it is, cork is even nice than my champion series, and the looks the rods has is amazing, from the paint to the kevlar wrap, its a beauty, and man the way it fishes is amazing. i was using it yesterday for a carolina rig in about 32ft of water, i could feel the bite from a 1.5lb smallmouth like it was a 5lb on a ultralite rod, so crisp. let me know how you like that 733 after you fish it several times, that was the next rod i am looking to purchase.. 1 Quote
Brian Needham Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I have always bought off recommendations of Richard and Gary....BUT I still say the DX is the better line for "contact" baits. Now I say that, but have not fished a bottom bait on a champion line in a long time. that 733 IS THE PERFECT, and I mean PERFECT 3/8oz spinnerbait rod and even 1/2oz really but I think the 734 is better on 1/2oz spinners. even with all that said, Dobyns make such great crossover rods, you can use them for just about anything in the weight range. now go check your "play money" account cause all you gonna want is more now, LOL 1 Quote

Man, 32 is deep. I can't remember the last time I fished that deep or even seen a SM. I'm stoked for the 745 to arrive. Jigs are my baby so it's defiantly going to see use. It's supposed to be 88 tomorrow and I'm on days off. Boat is loaded up for tomorrow am! Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted September 3, 2013 Super User Posted September 3, 2013 solid choice on rods. it's one of those you will never sell. now just wait until you get the 745. you're going to be wanting a 743 if you can even put the 745 down. Quote

Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 6, 2013 Author Super User Posted September 6, 2013 Well I guess I should be flattered! Glad it worked out for youThanks. I finally got a couple of hours on this rod over my days off. All I can say is wow! I spooled 65 yards of 12# Tatsu up and did some pitching in the living room. Kitchen has hardwood floors and I could feel every board. The sensitivity of this thing is amazing. The front yard was even better. I could feel all the grass as it was moving through. I went out off the dam of a local lake and ran a tube over some rocks. I was able to feel every rock. I thought my GL2's were sensitive, but this thing was worth every dollar. Quote
kschultz76 Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 Thanks for the update Rock. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a new rod and you know a Dobyns is a contender for me. Glad to hear you like it so far. Quote

I really can't believe how balanced and great it feels with my 50E paired. My 745 will be here Saturday, so both should get a decent work out Quote

(If you can even tell) Gary knows what he is talking about! Enjoy your new rods. 1 Quote
motodmast Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 how do you like your rods now youve fished them for a little bit? i have the 745, but im wanting to hear on that 733.. do you think you could toss a 3/8 jig on it? Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted September 13, 2013 Super User Posted September 13, 2013 you can..but that a 4/5 power is more ideal. Quote

I love it actually. I know this sounds weird, but I enjoy fishing it more than I do my 745 now. Maybe its because its lighter and a lighter action, but it feels better in my hand. I've been fishing tubes and 1/4oz rigs with ease. As for a 3.8oz jig, I'm not 100% sure. Its rated up to 3/4oz. I'll have to tie one on this weekend and see. I've never gone higher than a 1/4oz weighted hook at a medium size plastic. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted September 14, 2013 Super User Posted September 14, 2013 I have to agree, the 733 is a superbly built rod, one of the only that I really, really like in the Dobyns line. The DX795 is my "must have" from their line. The other rod that I've been fishing a ton, of late, is the Mike Long Jig rod. I didn't like it at first because I was soooooo used to the NRX and GLX, but now that I've become accustomed to the way the stick performs, I'm going to have to get a couple more. 1 Quote
Stingray23 Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 I'm dying to get my hands on a whole arsenal of Dobyns rods. Gonna wait till next season. Quote
Brian Needham Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 do you think you could toss a 3/8 jig on it? depends on the trailer, but it should because I have always said the 733 is THE 3/8 spinnerbait rod. I will say on a 734 is what I do my swim jiggin with, 1/2oz with rage grub trailer. Quote

I got two at the same time. It stung a bit, but It was worth it. If my two Shimano rods sell, Brian above is gonna be less one of his Quote
curtis9 Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 How does this rod compare to the 735? Both are listed as MH. I'm looking for a frog and jig rod. The 735 looks to be the better choice, but it's not clear to me what the differences between the 733, 734, 735 and 736 are. Quote
