John105 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I've recently been fishing a nice golf course pond (with a member of the club), and it's stained green to the point that the fish you can see under the water show up white (they look like ghost fish). Anyone have any info on what the cause of that might be, and if so, what the best bait colors would be for that type of water? Thanks! Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 A lot of golf courses treat their ponds with copper sulfate and/or other chemicals to keep algae and weed growth low. This is what the strange coloration comes from. Quote
mattlong5589 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Whenever the grass is cut at the golf course I fish at the surface turns green. But it doesn't change the color of the fish so it is probably not the case Quote
John105 Posted September 4, 2013 Author Posted September 4, 2013 The bass look normal once you get them out of the water. That's the weird part. The staining makes it look like you're looking at a photo negative of the fish. Anyone have a suggestion for best color jib to use? Caught a 4#er or so with natural colored jig and trailer, but that was only cause I didn't have any blue ones with me at the time. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted September 4, 2013 Super User Posted September 4, 2013 well try black and blue that always seems to work well.. or try a small swim jig.. but if its a gold course pond that doesnt get fished a lot try wacky rigginga senko, may work better imo Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 4, 2013 Super User Posted September 4, 2013 If the depth of light is poor or restricted to a foot or so the bass tend to be pale coloration, if there isn't a lot of weed growth. Bass can change coloration to suite their environmental conditions. High levels pH also tends to affect coloration, the higher the pH the lighter the coloration becomes. If you are catching bass with natural color jigs, why change? Try surface lures like a buzzer during low light periods, lots of fun to catch surface bass. Tom 1 Quote
John105 Posted September 5, 2013 Author Posted September 5, 2013 Well, I only caught one on natural colors in the three times I tried. It just happened to be a nice one haha. I will try the buzz and wacky rig senko the next time I go 1 Quote
Brian Needham Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 probably a sizable algae bloom going on, at least that's what is it when ponds look like that at my golf course. Quote
