WiregrassRiverRat Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 SO there are so many COFFEE infused soft plastics now days.. Any legitimacy to this or is it a fad.. AND ALSO If my wife has some leftover french press coffee she is going to throw out, can I throw that in a bag or jar and take it fishing and just dip my softplastic in it for an hour.. will it have the same effect (if there is one)... THOUGHTS.. As always thanks for your responses. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 2, 2013 Super User Posted September 2, 2013 I can't say whether or not it attracts fish, but does make them hold on longer. It also removes your scent as well. I do know this, of all the stinky factory scents, JJ's dip and everything else, the plastics that have been out of the bag or on a jig for a few days to weeks, the only ones that still have any smell to them at all are the Rage Tail Coffee scented plastics. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 2, 2013 Global Moderator Posted September 2, 2013 It certainly doesn't seem to repel them and it masks other scents, plus it smells WAY better than some other baits (power worms or Keitech swing impacts for instance). I don't see why you couldn't try to get your baits to soak up some of the scent. Just use some of your favorites so you're using something you know works. 1 Quote

Whether its a gimmick or not, I do not know, but I do enjoy Strike King's Plastics......Hell I seen KVD eat one, he only eats the finest. 1 Quote

I bite about 3/4" off the tail on my Rage Craw's all the time. While its not a 27 day old age Kansas Ribeye, they don't taste too bad. Now the Netbait Paca craws........Don't bite them. I have an iron gut, that that crap turned me green! 1 Quote

Seriously though, the coffee scented plastics do leave a much better "aroma" then any of my plastics. Quote

Super User Sam Posted September 2, 2013 Super User Posted September 2, 2013 There is a story behind the coffee scent. Kevin VanDam shared it with us at a previous Richmond Fishing Expo. The Berkley research guys were in a creek experimenting with different lures when one of them dumped the coffee grounds from the morning coffee into the water next to the bank. They noticed that the minnows were attracted to the coffee grounds, immediately. So being inquisitive people (who seem to pollute our waters) they did it again. And the minnows were attracted to those grounds, too. When they returned to the Pure Fishing lab they decided to try experimenting with coffee and the bass population. Their experiments showed that not only were minnows attracted to coffee but so were largemouth bass. This opened the door to coffee scented plastics and they got VanDam, who had nothing to do with the research other than use some of the baits, put his mug on the packaging. Does coffee scented baits work? I really don't know. I use mostly Zoom plastics with either JJs or MegaStrike and the Berkley Powerbaits but have not thrown the coffee scented baits. How about you guys trying them and letting us know if the coffee scent really makes a difference. If so, I bet Louisiana coffee will knock their socks off the largemouth bass!!! 1 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted September 2, 2013 Super User Posted September 2, 2013 Coffe grounds (scent) go way back with farm raised worms, fish loved them and evolved with soft plastics 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted September 2, 2013 Super User Posted September 2, 2013 Coffe grounds (scent) go way back with farm raised worms, fish loved them and evolved with soft plastics Agree. Way back when I was a kid, my Dad used to bring a coffee can with used grounds and full of night crawlers. Worked great -- but then so does a nightcrawler fresh out of the soil. Whether the scent actually increases your catch is open for debate. I've seen minnows go hawg wild after spit, sooooo..... But undoubtedly, coffee scented baits smell good! Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 2, 2013 Super User Posted September 2, 2013 Here comes the next big debate...regular or decaf. I'm thinking forget the regular and decaf coffee and get the coffee liquor? They make like the high test? In a spray bottle. Patent it quick as a new fish scent. What about all the other flavored liquors? Or snopp's??? Peppermint? etc. I just purchased two packages of the KVD coffee scented swimbaits. 1 Quote

As a recovering alcoholic, I would make an exception of having this in my possession if proven effective! Do ya think tournament officials would bend the rules to allow such a product? How bout an Alabama rig doused in coffee liquor? 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted September 2, 2013 Super User Posted September 2, 2013 First you raised a very good point. This is why different minds see things in other directions. I look for opinions in my posts. We could mix a tad of coffee liquor with coffee to not use the full strength. The weigh in would smell like a sleepy bar at 12pm. It's not a bad thing for a bar but unacceptable for a weigh in. Or how about a non alcoholic flavor but tastes and smells better than your normal cup of Joe would. I'm surprised we haven't seen a strike king KVD coffee spray scent yet? Then we can use it on everything. For now I'll empty my keurig used k cup coffee grounds into a bottle of coffee and let it work it's magic. The stronger the better. Then filter some into a squirt bottle for scent use. Sorry for jumping around but we do have choices and options. Free garlic scent, One more suggestion about garlic scent. My misses uses the jar of chopped garlic. When it's empty of garlic she throws the garlic juices away. Why waste it we have fresh squeezed garlic juices for scent. And it's free. 1 Quote
jignfule Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 All I can tell you is my own experience. I was fishing tubes, with good success one day. Changed over to SK coffee tubes and immediately noticed more gut hooks. I modified my techique to try to prevent it, but something about that tube made the bass want to hang on and shallow. It could have been another reason been I imagine it was the coffee scent. Quote
hookset on 3 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 When the Strike King coffee scent hit the market a few years back, I used the KVD Tubes a lot. They seemed to be very effective, so I thought the same thing as "BigBill" and tried my grounds from my leftover morning cup 'a joe. They worked great and I noticed that it masked the plastic smell on my soft baits. For about a year I used this set up often, but for no good reason, I got out of the habit of bringing a bag of used coffee grounds with me when fishing. I'm going to start to try and get back into doing it, because for me, it seemed to make the Bass hang on longer. Thanks for the reminder Fellas! Quote

Smallmouth Hunter Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I read somewhere that the way that strike king found that fish are attracted to coffee is one of the bait designers was fishing and knocked his coffee over into water, and somehow there was coffee grounds in it (i can't really remember the story) and apparently panfish came up and ate it like crazy. Then he went and tried using it as a scent somehow and found it was great. Quote

But really, maybe we could get a bunch of guys to chew different flavors of sunflower seeds, collect the flavored spit and market it. ...this is going downhill fast... 1 Quote
