I bought another one yesterday for $40, because they're on clearance. This scares me because it's the best reel I can afford and I would hate for them to quit making them. So are they being completely done away with or updated?

No clue, perhaps they're updating it.  Or they may be phasing it out altogether, though I find that hard to swallow since it's got to be their best-selling model.  An update wouldn't surprise me; perhaps they're switching the Mettle to the same frame as the Menace and Mystic.

Yeah I'd find it hard to believe that they would get rid of the mettle, but they better not start messing with my ethos.

My local Academy's put them on sale all the time. Mgr said its because corporate does all the ordering. They baise the ordering off the Mettle's over all sales. They have at times over 900 in stock. When they get like that, they clearance then off cheap. It's the same reel and will go back to full price in a week to a month. It happened3-4 times last year too. On the Black Friday sales, they had them down to like 20 bucks a pop. They went like crazy

Might be as Rockchalk says because they put their swimbaits on clearance a while back and the same models are full price again.

Ok. I just got a little scared and needed to know if I need to start stocking up. They're on clearance on the website if any one wants to buy one.

I hope not....these things are the best entry level reel on the market. I feel comfortable saying that. I got mine for $25 a piece. If it weren't for buying $200-ish reels, I still would use mine.

The Mettle is officially being discontinued.  This from an Academy employee:

"Talking to my supervisors today, and they are saying that they are being discontinued as of now. However, they do not know if there is a replacement or not. My guess is that there will be. Silstar makes our reels and I am sure they will replace it. We got the new Mystic in during the Spring reset, so that tells me that they will, at least, have a new "entry level" model in the works. If there is a street date, it may be around Christmas time, IMO."

If you want a current-generation Mettle, better get 'em while they last.

If there is a new Mettle, I hope they do four things:  Keep the metal frame, switch to the profile used on the Menace and Mystic, improve the drag, and offer it in multiple gear ratios.  If they have to lower the bearing count to keep the reel priced at $50 while incorporating the other things, that's fine; I'd be fine with a lower bearing count and a better drag.

Maybe if we're lucky that guys not up to par on his knowledge about this and they're just adding some more ratios and doing like they did with their swim baits.
