churchcc12 Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Hey everybody, I'm in the market for a new baitcaster and I have a few questions. 1. What length rod would you recommend to throw soft plastics? I've heard anywhere from 6' to 7'3" and I'm unsure what to choose. 2. Would a St. Croix Mojo be a good rod for these techniques? I was thinking either the 6'6 or the 7' medium action rod. 3. I'm thinking about getting either an abu garcia revo stx or a pfleuger patriarch to complete the set-up. If someone could give their opinion for which of these would be better that'd be great. Thanks in advance for any advice! Quote
Todd2 Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 I can't help on those models. But for me, I really like a 6'8 MH for pitching and 7'0MH for casting. The shorter rod is just easier for me to get accurate pitches. Quote
churchcc12 Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 Thanks for the quick reply Todd. I already have a 7'0 MH and I love it for pitching and casting. I guess I should have specified that I'm looking to throw somewhat smaller weights and baits on this rod. I'm not really looking for a heavier rod to punch through cover and stuff like that. I wouldn't say I'm looking for a finesse rod, but something lighter than my MH veritas anyways. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 The Mojo is a good over the counter rod. St Croix rods in general fish a little heavier than similarly labeled rods from other manufacturers. Handle one before buying to be sure it fits the bill. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted August 28, 2013 Super User Posted August 28, 2013 get a falcon bucoo over the mojo.it's much lighter and more sensitive.the micro guide model is really nice.the mojo feels like a ton of bricks compared to the falcon.i would get a 6-6 mh. Quote
mjseverson24 Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 try the st. croix triumph 7' m for 70-80 bucks it is a great lightweight and sensitive rod. for the real both are great options I would only suggest the fastest gear ratio you can find. Mitch Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted August 28, 2013 Super User Posted August 28, 2013 i don't use anything you mentioned but the *** black rods seem to have the strongest following in the 100$ price range. i'm tall (6'3) and use 7'1 and a few 7'4s for jigs and plastics. the 7'4 feels much more comfortable to me and i'm fairly accurate with it. as for the reel, either would be a solid choice. they are both in the upper middle to high class of their reels. just make sure you get one that's comfortable in hand. personally nothing is more agitating than an uncomfortable grip trying to palm a reel. as for the power of the rod, if the lighter baits are your primary choice, a M action rod will due fine. if you fish any sort of sparse grass/wood/etc a MH will be more well rounded and still be more than applicable. churchcc12 Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 Thanks everybody for the advice, it certainly looks like I have a lot of options! The *** black rods look like they would be perfect for what I plan on using one for. Quote
Cgrinder Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 First off, what up SE Michigan. On to your questions, for the same price as a Mojo Bass, you can get an *** Black, which is the flavor of the year rod so far. Time will tell if they're good for the long run but so far, they are meeting or exceeding expectations. I have one and it is very nice for the price. As said, the St. Croix's tend to fish a little heavier. 6'10" or 7'1" would be my length recommendations. As for reels, there have been some issues with the gen 3 Revos. Most people seem to have moved on, save for die-hard Abu fans or people who hate Shimano. I'm being a little facetious here. Don't shoot. I like the look of the new Pfluegers but they are just that, new. I haven't found any info on them yet. If I was going to buy a reel for plastics tomorrow, I would buy a Chronarch 50E new or fleabay a Curado 50E. I have one Chronarch and it is very good for throwing the small stuff. Lew's is also a good option from what I have read. Quote
