Did A Dumb Thing

I did something today that was just plain dumb. I went out and bought a few River2Sea crankbaits. I was anxious to try out the new colors so off to the dam I went. I had a crosslock snap tied on a rod my grandson had been using the other day. I snapped on one of the new baits and promptly caught three bass. I was mentally congradulating myself on the lure choice. Two casts later, my brand new bait arched gracefully out over the water. And my loose line slowly fell to the water. The whole gist is; I was too lazy to remove the snap and retie. Just a reminder to everyone, retie, retie, retie.......

Thanks, Dwight.  No, Caylub, I couldn't retrieve it, hopefully it will drift to shore where some youngster will find it and put it to good use.

I have lost baits and fish because I was too lazy to retie.

 

And I knew it at the time.

 

Last time it happened was on the Rappahannock River in Virginia when I was killing time about 50 yards from the ramp waiting for weigh-in.

 

I picked up a spinning rig with a wacky Senko and just started to drop it on among the wood along the shoreline. Sure enough, a beautiful two and a half pound (if not larger) largemouth hit the Senko and during the battle the line broke off at the hook's eye. You can tell by the way the line looks after it breaks off that it was at the hook's eye.

 

They say you could hear my yell up and down the river for about a mile.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Mine could have ended worse.

Had an Ika with a 5/0 ewg at the end. The hook has been on there for about 7 trips. About 15 fish caught total. Never thought about retying.

Launched the bait a little off target.... Almost right at a boater. Not too close, but close enough for them to notice. Whew!

I usually have the line wrapped around the rod tip when I snap off a bait.

I lost a crankbait last July while using a Quick-Snap.  I made a long cast and for a second or two I was quite pleased watching it fly, until I realized my line was slack.

 

When I reeled in the line the Quick-Snap was still there.

If that is the dumbest thing you did all day, you had a pretty good day.  At least you landed 3 fish before you sailed it.

I have had the same problem with quick snaps.....They are handy, BUT, the line will pop off here and there....I just quit using them.

I can cast a soft plastic hundreds of times, at structure, under it skip it into the weeds and pull it out etc... If I cast anywhere near anything with a $$ crankbait forget it. It is magnetically attracted to every bit of structure there is. 

 

Beyond that, I have lost more than one as it sails off into the distance alone. If I snag a cheap soft plastic I can drag the boat all the way to it without breaking off. Sinking / suspending crankbait, nope. I guess it's my sacrifice to the tackle / fishing gods.

Great lesson. I am going to retie when I get to the lake. I've had a drop shot rig tied for about 3 weeks and  a wacky rig that I know has a nick in the line. We all get lazy, me probably more than most.

i know some one on here who got a brand new hudd bait, went to the lake  first cast and well have you ever seen a flying trout ? I Did !!!!!

I feel your pain. That's a horrible feeling when you see your lure go flying into oblivion.
