Well i went into the local tackle store to pick up some fluro for leaders. While i was looking a sales guy comes up and asks if he can help me. I explain my scenario. He takes me straight to the vanish. Now something in my mind pops up and i start to think ive heard really negative reviews on this stuff. But he assures me in his canadian accent that its what he uses and he never has any issues with 8lb for bass and that its breaking point was probably closer to 10lbs. So i think to myself ok, this guy wouldnt steer me wrong.  Well tonight i read some reviews and decided to test out how much trouble its going to cause me. I hook it to a weight and connect the other end to my scale and start to pull up slowly. With multiple attempts using  new line the highest i could get before it snapped was 4lbs 7 oz.  Ive written berkley so hopefully they will make it right, im just happy i never took it out and lost fish with it. Any ideas on what i could use it for? I was thinking maybe use it to hang christmas ornaments but even they might snap it.

Return it. I've got some 20# I tested out for a leader. Never broke a fish off and I could lift a 25# weight all day and it never broken. As a main line, it sucks, but for a leader, its not the worst I've ever tried. If you want a quality leader fluoro, I'd go with Seaguar Red Label. Horrible for memory as a main line, but its great as a leader.

What he said.  I tried out Vanish too as just a leader and lost 2 nice fish, the knot strength is crazy non existent.  Ever since I moved to Red Label, I haven't lost a fish due to breakage or knot strength issues, I was able to even pull up a 4.10 lb  bass on Friday with 8lb test with a lot of grass.  I was worried it was going to break, but it didn't!  .

Sad part is the guy more than likely didn't even make commission. He just didn't know his stuff. Take it back and get a refund. They should make it right for you.

A lot of reputable people have had problems like that so at least some of its junk! I had some 12#? And used it as a mainline and it worked Great! I know enough people that have had problems with it that I won't push my luck and buy another spool.

My buddy Noel (wnybassman) swears by the stuff.  He holds some club records, and has quite a few smallies over 6 under his belt.  I've fished Erie with him, and every time he set the hook, I cringed.  But he sticks it to them, and hard, sometimes double setting the hook.  I can't say I've had the same experience with the line, and won't use it.  One thing I know he does different than most is he uses an improved cinch knot.

I use the "Trilene Knot".  You'd think that would work well with Vanish.

I would use it to practice tying knots with if the store wont take it back..

Not sure if the store will take it back since i tossed out the receipt and the box. Wish i would of went with my gut, but he really pushed it.  The surprising part when i tested it was that the knots didnt break. It broke right in the middle every time.

I bought 40# vanish leader, not mainline used as leader which is different, the strength and knots seemed to be fine.  I don't have much success using an improved clinch in lines of that diameter, I get a better knot using an extra wrap with an ordinary clinch.  I didn't see any more strikes with a F/C leader, went back to Ande mono leaders.  I Use P-line floroclear in 20# for some of my inshore fishing, it has performed just fine.

When I first got into fishing I used the 14lb for light jigs and flukes and never had a problem over multiple spools.

Based on what I have read, I must have gotten really lucky. Then again, maybe that test is the sweet spot in their lineup.

Berkely 100% fluoro is much better line but of course is more expensive...

I went back to pick up some more line today and thankfully the guy who normally helps me was in. When i mentioned that i had been talked into the berkley vanish from another employee. He looked at me and the first thing he said was "sorry" and i hadnt even mentioned how terrible it was for me yet. I ended up walking out with gamma edge competition. Reviews online say that it is very good. I guess we will see.

Gamma makes good line, though I haven't used that particular one.

It's obvious that I must do something different.   I tie the improved clinch, mainly because it's the ONLY KNOT I KNOW HOW TO TIE!!!    lol    Yeah, I've broke off a few fish over the years, but I fish zebra mussel infested waters and I see guys break off the same number of fish on "better" lines too.   I can anchor my boat with 8 pound Vanish, and have moved the boat against a decent chop after getting hung on the bottom.   I have never seen a reason to change.

This picture always seems to surface also, caught on 4 pound Vanish.  The fish spooled me, I chased it down with the trolling motor on high for 45 minutes, and it took me into 4 feet of heavy weeds twice as well as out to 30+ feet three times.

I won't recommend the line to anyone, but it's the only line I'll use in the foreseeable future, or at least until I get one of those infamous bad spools.

Sounds like your describing my Seagur Kanzen wish you better luck with Berkley CS than what I received from Seaguar.

i bought some in 10 pound and its pretty weak. i got it on my spinning reel so it might be ok but on my pro max i got a terrible backlash twice and had cut tons of line off. it may be good as a leader in heavier pd, but not as a main line. im switching too trilene big game 12pd. anyone know if its any good i got a big spool for free.

The only issue I had with it (12 lb test) was knot strength. Went to 5 wraps and it got better. Never tried a palomar knot. Still, I don't use it any longer.

I used it earlier this year and lost one pushing 4.5 or 5 lbs. right at the boat. I was using a palomar and the stuff still broke.  I then took it both of my rods that had it and threw it all in the trash. Count you blessing that you never took it out on the lake and lost some fish.

Never had any trouble with 8lb used as a leader for drop-shotting, and other finesse work. But for anything else I didn't care for it. I would break 17lb test quite often on hooksets with jigs/plastics, either as a leader or as main line. Since I have switched to Seaguar Red Label I have not had any of the same issues.

I was with a lot of the others and began using it as leader material until yesterday.  Twice I put 8lb vanish on my 10lb Power Pro.  Both times I was fighting a decent bass and the line snapped.  When I reeled it in I saw the leader was off and the snap was at the double-uni.  The knot was still in tact and the fluor above the knot was there.  That has never happened to me with any other leader material.

It could be 2 bad knots but I tied the 3rd with Berkley 100% FC and fished the rest of the day with zero issues.
