Ducketts Vs. Dobyns

IMHO, you would be taking a step backwards, going from Dobyns Champion series to the Duckett rods.

x2. you should be talking him into dropping his ducketts for dobyns.  or save ur breath. you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink. ducketts are nice but you have the better rods.

My buddy is supposed to be coming to fish with me next week so i'll get to check out his ducketts after all, the only real concern i had with them are the micro guides i guess it's all in what you like though. Thanks again for all the suggestions

Keep in mind, Duckett has the Macro Magic. It's basically the same rod, but with regular guides and the trim is gold over red.

In almost every category, a Duckett is going to be a downgrade from Dobyns, with very rare exception.

I once thought about switching to duckett, just because they are cheaper, then I got one, and I dumped it REAL QUICK.

 

Dobyns are technique driven, with many all purpose rods.

Ducketts are more all purpose rods.

 

I didn't like the feel, balance or actions with the Ducketts. I have been lucky enough to fish with a dobyns since I been fishing and it will stay that way.

 

if you look, watch and ask around, you will see breakage issue with the ducketts.......

I have the Savvy, and the Champion series. The Savvy gets the most use. I say, fish your own feelings, not someone else's.

most of mine are the DX.

 

do not get me wrong, the Duckett is a good rod and MANY MANY people love them.

if I had $150 budget to buy rods I would probably have a boat full of Ducketts.

 

I had gotten the one duckett I tried after a few years with the Dobyns DX, so I was a little spoiled.

I really wanted the Ducketts to work for me, as I could have gone 2 for 1 price wise in the used market.

 

the Dobyns do weigh more, but balances better which IMO make it fish better. I handled the duckett and dobyns side by side with the same reel. The Dobyns was like 2 maybe 3 ozs heavier on a scale, but felt lighter fishing because the Dobyns was not tip heavy at all. in this "test" the Dobyns was also 3-4 inches longer......... I do not like split handles which is an automatic strike against duckett.

So as you can see most of my opinion is based on opinion and my personal preferences. but it is an honest opinion, trying to be a fan boy or blinded by hype.

 

1 thing I can assure you on the Ducketts, they fish a power weak. Meaning if you normally fish jigs on a MH, you need a H in a duckett. Not a knock at all, just something you need to know and try to handle the rod before buying.

I was in this same boat. I ended up going with the Duckett because I was looking for something sensitive and loved using my buddy's Duckett. I have not used Dobyns but from everything I have read the Savvy isn't nearly as good as the Champion but it was also almost $70 more than the Duckett and Savvy. I like the split grip and how light the duckett is in my hands. With my Lews Tournament Pro Speed spool it is super light and a pleasure to fish with. I agree with Brian that the power is weaker but it still handles everything I need it for just fine. Bottom line is that everything is opinion, until you get both in your hands its tough to say, which is what makes picking a rod so difficult sight unseen. Someone needs to come up with a rod demo program like what TW has with reels.
