JTMONEY606 Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 i am about buy a chronarch 200E7 and this will be the first high dollar reel i have owned besides a cheaper pro max. im looking for a good split rod that i can throw texas rigged worms and senkos, sometimes wacky rigged. spinnerbaits. prefer cork if possible and like stay around 175 but could mybe budge 200 bucks. hows the Doybins savy would it pair up good you think. i fish pretty much 5 days out of 7 from the bank. theres a river close to my house and i been slaying bass down there this summer. looking at getting a john boat and trolling motor for next summer. Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 25, 2013 Super User Posted August 25, 2013 There are several options in that price range so your not limited. I can't comment on the Savy as I have never used one, but PM Large Mouth Gambler here. He's got 2 that I know of and he raves about them. With LMG, if he likes it, he'll be honest as hell and tell you. The Champion is what I'm dead seat on for my light plastics. It's at 250 a bit high in your range, but TW will be having their sale in a couple of days. Usually 15% and that will knock it down to around 220 ish. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted August 25, 2013 Super User Posted August 25, 2013 I have 4 Dobyns Savvy rods. Use them for just about everything, worms and jigs, spinnerbaits, cranks, like I said, everything. I know some say they are not sensitive enough for jigs or worms, BUT, I have never had a problem detecting strikes, and I have about as much sensitivity in my hands and fingers as twigs. So personally, for the money, I think the Chronarch and Savvy will make a great combo. Mine, by the way, are 6' 6", MH. Hootie 1 Quote

Super User MarkH024 Posted August 25, 2013 Super User Posted August 25, 2013 You're going to love that reel. Its one of my favorites that I own. For a little bit more money you could consider a St Croix Legend Tournament Bass rod. Avid would be in the range but full cork grips only. Good luck and enjoy the reel! 1 Quote
Arv Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Add the Powell line of rods and Phenix to your list. I can't comment on the Savvy yet but I should have one arriving on Monday. I pretty much only buy Powell now though. The Max would be a great rod for your price range, IMO. Quote
skeletor6 Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 For the techniques you mentioned you should be spending at least as much on your rod as you did on your reel. Buy items at discount to improve your utility. I would look at a dobyns champion, Phenix m1 or recon... the Gen 1 cumaras or a used glx like a 844 or 843 I've seen go for around 200 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted August 25, 2013 Super User Posted August 25, 2013 The Dobyn's Savvy series is a great, well balanced rod for anything except those light bite bottom contact presentations. It isn't that the rod isn't sensitive, there are just better options in your price range for sensitivity. I could be a bit biased fishing mostly the DX(dpbyns chamption extreme) line for bottom contacts but the savvy just kind of leaves you wanting more in the bottom contact area. I've was curious myself about the sensitivity about them and having had them for a while, never bothered putting them to the test. I took my swim jig rod (savvy 733), a 3/16oz tungsten weight pegged and unpegged /w a smallie beaver and pitched it around a while. This is one of my few rods that uses straight braid so my experience was obviously "heightened" with the no stretch line. I could honestly feel rock/sand trasitions for the most part and the majority of bites were very distinct but there were more times than I would have liked I didn't feel a light pick up at all that i normally do with a DX/fluoro set up. Not the worst situation in the word but it just leaves you wanting more. They are my favorite swim jig/spinnerbait/frog rod. Fantastic for these things. perfectly balanced with a 200 series curado. I don't use Powell but they have a decent enough following that they deserve a good consideration. If you can find a Gen 1 cumara that would be a great choice as well. the Phenix M1 or recon 2 would be a much better bottom contact bait rod than the savvy as well. The labor say sales are approaching within the next week and the dobyns champion series on sale will run you right into your price range. i'd strongly recommend the champion 734 or 733. I love the DX743 for any weightless baits and the Champion 733 would be more than idea for any sort of weightless fluke/senko type bait. the 734 would be the best all around rod they make and can be used for really anything. If you end up ordering either of these, make sure you choose the SH(split handle) version as the champ goes in both full and split grip. The legend tournament bass 7'1 MF would also be a great option. sensitivity is great and the 7+M/F rod could arguably one of the finest multi purpose rods on the market. If you don't go with the champion, this would be my pick. this would also be in your price range when the labor day sales start. bass.tackle.depot usually runs 20% off sales as opposed to most 15% of others. Global Moderator Mike L Posted August 25, 2013 Global Moderator Posted August 25, 2013 Phenix M1, Phenix M1. Phenix M1...No I didn't stutter I love these rods...Light, Strong, and as Sensitive as anything you can buy, and in your range. Mike Quote
Cgrinder Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 I'm really into the gen 2 Cumaras. I love the stupid truncated handle. I don't know why. They can be had for less than $200. If you're set on Dobyns, you can get a good deal on a Champion on flea bay. Quote
paul25 Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 I have a dobyns savy rod i like it just as good as my champion series rods and i throw jigs mostly on it but i have thrown spinnerbaits texas rigs and flukes on it its a 7fti MH rod 1 Quote
Capt.Bob Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 You're going to love that reel. Its one of my favorites that I own. For a little bit more money you could consider a St Croix Legend Tournament Bass rod. Avid would be in the range but full cork grips only. Good luck and enjoy the reel! Would be the only rod close to your budget I would consider for such a fine reel, If I was buying split cork grip's, my choice would be the Legend Elite, but don't cut corners by putting such a low dollar amount on the rod, You are going to be glad you didn't do that on the reel, The LTB from St. Croix will make you never look back,, you can put that in the bank. Buy a cheaper rod and be assured,,,,,you'll always wonder how nice that outfit could have been!!! 1 Quote
5dollarsplash Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Being in a similar position recently with a 50e, I agree with those who recommend the LTB from St Croix. I love mine so much I just bought another on Friday. Capt Bob is right when it comes to remorse, many rods living in my fishing rack can attest to it. Quote
DirtyDeuceGoose Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Go for the mojo bass by st. croix. Better rods than a lot of people give them credit for 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 26, 2013 Super User Posted August 26, 2013 Pretty much any MH/F or MH/XF in 6-8 to 7-4 will do in that price range. There's aren't too many duds above $150. 1 Quote
Grantman83 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Lol I have a savvy 703c I would part with for a good price. I Just have an extra and It's a great all round rod and can do everything you asked for... Pm me of interested Quote
JTMONEY606 Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 thanks for the advice i dont want skimp on this setup. im not rich by no means but i want something that will last cause like i said i fish 5 out of 7 days a week. i love the st, croix legend touny it was one of my fav rods i ever looked at when i got into bass fishing harder. grantman i will PM you. BTW would a cumura if i could get one on sale for mybe 200 be a good pair. i have never held one but i love the look. i know they have different ones with the symbols on the bottom grip.i think the jig and worm maroon color would look beautiful on the chronarch. Quote
Cgrinder Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 I've got the Chronarch 51e on the 6'8" MF Cumara Jig and Worm. It's a very light setup and casts nicely. I guess the F's are for worms and the XF's are recommended for jigs. The M is only rated 1/8 to 1/4 oz but I feel like it is a conservative rating. I'm sure 3/8 oz would be doable. I bought a gen 2 Cumara for exactly the reason you described. It's a very good looking rod. You should handle one first. It's a different handle design but I really like it. At this point I'm trying extremely hard not to buy more Cumaras. Quote
