AJMichigan Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I'm looking for a new rod, and really like the action my current one gives me. It's a shakespear medium action rod that's 5'6" Have never had an issue with it bringing in big fish, and I enjoy shorter rods over longer ones. Any suggestions on a rod that would be similar and not cost me an arm and a leg? Quote
Super User MCS Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 Check out the Falcon HD and Originals...They tend to make a softer action. They run 70 and 90 bucks. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Hm.. berkley cherrywood or lighting rod shock are great rods with many different actions and lengths. They will run you between $25-$50. You could also look at a shimano sellus, which I have no experience with but I have heard good things about. You may also be able to find a good deal on a higher end rod with the labor day sales coming up. Good luck! Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 I use mainly all shakespeare fishing rods for my spinning and baitcaster setups. I been happy so far. I also have the cherrywood rods for both reels too. Quote

And by Shakespeare, do you mean the Ugly Stik, Ugly Stik Lite, or one of their other models? I'm a fan of shorter rods, too, we're probably in the minority among a lot of bass fishermen. My favorite rods are 5'9" and 6' long. But I go shorter than that with one Shakespeare Ugly Stik Lite in L power. If you're budget is $50 or lower, and durability is your main concern, it's hard to beat the Ugly Stik Lite series (with cork handles), not the original all-black Ugly Stiks. That is, if sensitivity isn't your priority. If you want a solid rod around the $50 mark, the Berkley Lighting Rod Shock is pretty nice. Quote
AJMichigan Posted August 23, 2013 Author Posted August 23, 2013 I'm honestly not sure of the exact model. The lettering on the pole is pretty worn off but i'll see if I can find it the next time I go out. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 23, 2013 Super User Posted August 23, 2013 Geez... Why not buy a decent rod on our Flea Market? For the same price I bet one of our members has something interesting for sale. Save your money for a couple of months and buy something you will fish for a decade or two. For just a few dollars more you can buy MUCH better gear. Quote

I have a rod I could part with if you want it. Its a 5'6 MH XF Shimano Clarus. I'd sell it to you within your price range and its practically brand new. Pm if your interested. It doesn't see much use in my line up. Quote

JD96 Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Whippy rods lack the hook setting power that a good MH or even a nice M rod will have. Trust me, I recently made the switch from cheap Shakespeare rods and used to lose a bunch of fish, not anymore, if I can feel that thump I'm setting the hook and it's usually cake as I winch it in with my 7.1:1 geared reel. Just give a nice rod a try, if you still like the Shakespeare, get it. Also you pick up huge casting distance with a longer rod. Quote
