timothy_spain Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 What kinda setup do you use when you're throwing a Heddon Tiny Torpedo? I'm using a 6' St. Croix Premiere ML, Shimano Sahara 1000, 4# mono and have yet to catch anything on the tiny torpedo. But I can imagine the fight I'd have on the end of my line if a SM were to smash it. Quote
NateFollmer Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I use braid with a flourocarbon leader... I KNOW, I KNOW flouro sinks. I'll put on a mono leader if the topwater bite lasts, but I usually only hit the topwater window for maybe an hour or so. Usually between the braid and the lure floating, thats enough to keep the flouro on top for awhile (sometimes I even coat the flouro with dry fly spray and it floats that way ). Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I usually throw them on my 7' Carbonlite M rod with a Curado and 12lb Suffix Seige. I have also recently learned that there is no wrong way to fish one. I always twitch it and pop it and had success, but the other day I was fishing with a buddy and he simply burned it and caught fish! I had never heard of that, but it worked. Great bait!! Quote
timothy_spain Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 I've got a 7' Vendetta paired with a Abu Garcia SX 7.1 20# sufix braid ... and it's extremely hard for me to get that tiny torpedo any distance at all without backlashing. And if I do get it out, my accuracy is way off. I've tried adjusting my brakes. Is it just because I'm not comfortable with it yet, is that why I can't get it to go on my baitcaster setup? Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 IMO braid is your problem. 1. Braid reduces distance on your cast vs. mono. 2. Braid has zero stretch, so when you do get a strike you will pull it right out of the fish's mouth. Accuracy wise, it just takes practice. That thing is super light, so you have to guide it into spots. With the right setting on your reel and some practice, you can do it tho. What power/action is your rod? I wouldn't fish it on anything heavier than M. Quote
timothy_spain Posted August 4, 2010 Author Posted August 4, 2010 My Vendetta is MH. I don't use my baitcaster for casting small lures like that, but if I was going to (or to test), I guess I should start by putting on mono to get the best results. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 5, 2010 Super User Posted August 5, 2010 I throw the tiny on medium spinning gear, a fiberglass rod, and 6 - 10 pound test mono. Little Rips with pauses seem to work the best so far. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 5, 2010 Super User Posted August 5, 2010 I gave my future daughter in law a 5'6" rod with 6lb test and a small topedo in lepord frog and she used a rip/pause and was catching bass near the cattails. She picked up on how to use it quickly. All my daughter in laws are fisherwoman's. All these young girls fish, one girls dad has a lobster boat in Maine too that she goes out on when she is up there. I always told my sons if the girl can bait there own hooks and remove the fish you better marry them, there keepers. Quote
