Siebert Outdoors Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I'm looking for some pointers on the Hero 3. I have tried to make about 3-4 videos with it. One being pickwick road trip and just lately a dive video of my jig actions. The videos are coming out real choppy when you view them. I know its a setting issue that i'm using. For you guys that have this camera what setting is your favorite for good videos? Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Mike, I am thinking it is one of 2 things: 1) The video setting you are recording in. always use the best quality (1080/60fps) 2) Your sd card. Make sure it is write speed 10 Jeff Quote
RoachDad Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I would bet money that it is your computer. You have to meet the minimum requirements. I had the same problem. Usually minimum requirements are just guidelines, but not with the GoPro. You need 4 GB RAM and 2.4 or 2.5 Ghz processor. And that is the minimum. If that is all you have, you have to process 1 video at a time and it takes a while to get things rendered. I bought a used laptop for 175. Not bad, but when you add it to the cost of the camera and the mounts and ..... it adds up. The computer I had when I bought the gopro was 2 GB RAM and 1.9 GHz. And it just could not handle it. Plus I need to buy at least 1 extra battery. These little cameras are awesome but they cost a little bit to operate. Quote

Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Is it choppy just when you are viewing it after loading to the computer? Have you tried loading it to a host site to see the results? I ask because mine will occasionally do that but views fine when uploaded to YT. Try uploading a short section to still see if it is choppy. The 10 speed card will help but depending on the level of chop that might not be the entire problem. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 It is choppy when I view it. I will try to upload it to a host site and see what happens. I will also try viewing it on the go pro screen to see if that chops. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Also try looking at it in the free GoPro editing software (if you have it) I've had it smooth out doing that. My issue looked like it would skip about every other second, just for your reference. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 When I downloaded the videos last night that's where it was real choppy was in the GO Pro software. The program was kicking me out and closing also. I removed the software and reinstalled it. Same thing. I'm hoping RoachDad is not right and my computer is too old. I'm going to check out the specs of it tonight. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 Mike, first step was getting class 10 card. Next your pc specs are important. Do you know that info? Both my pc's at home are too underpowered and playback choppy video. Also be sure you're not trying to watch the video straight off the card. Copy the files to your pc first and then watch it. Choppy video viewing makes it really difficult to edit especially lengthy clips. Try shooting at 720p/60. If your program was closing more than likely your pc specs are too low. This is why I haven't used mine quite as much. Its a b***** to edit for me right now. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 I checked the specs and messed with the video editing last night. Its the computer. My video card is old. I met the ram specs but barely. Thanks everyone for the help. Now I will have to start shopping for a better computer that will handle this. The uploaded video works fine on youtube. My goal is to start making good videos of fish and lures in action. I'm thinking about switching over to a Mac. Not real sure. Quote
