CayMar Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I was wondering if you guys have any tips for quitting smoking cigarettes? I'm smoking the last one I have now and I'd like to get on the quitting train 100%. It's easy to say I want to quit but sticking to my guns about it is easier said than done. My wife doesn't smoke so when I'm at home it is pretty easy. When I'm around other smokers is when things get tough. I guess its the accessibility to cigarettes. Any tips you guys could pass on would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Start with the Ecigs. They are not better than quitting, but you can spell again, taste food and not worry about others smelling your smoke. I did the same and it worked well. I just gradually reduced the ecigs until I winged myself off m Quote

wnybassman Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 You have to really want it.   Once that is established, the rest will fall into place.  It ain't easy and keep yourself busy. Quote
jherm87 Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Put yourself in the non smoker category, mentally tell yourself it's been longer than it has and tell yourself you don't want one. Distance yourself from other smokers the first month or two until you can't stand them and you don't even want anything to do with smoking. Try not to substitute if you can, do not use food! You will gain more weight and it will make you want to smoke, but it won't help the weight come off. I've taken a break from smoking more than once, but I'm pushing for this to be the last time. Good luck Quote
Super User slonezp Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Cold turkey. I smoked 20 years 2-3 packs a day towards the end. Chewed a lot of gum for maybe a year. That was back in 1999 and haven't smoked since. I don't know how anybody can afford to smoke. A pack of smokes in Chicago cost $10-$12. 2 Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 I used the patch for about the first 10 days the important thing is Quit 100% I haven't had 1 in 8+ years but I'm still 1 cigarette away from a pack a day habit. Quote
MO_LMB Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 The people recommending cold turkey know what they are talking about. Â It is all mental. For me the hardest part was getting into my car and not lighting a cigarette. Also, and maybe most importantly was not allowing myself to buy cigarettes. If you stop buying cigarettes you will stop smoking them. Yes your friends may bum you some, but eventually you will probably feel like a mooch lol. Â You have to WANT to stop smoking very badly as you will want a cigarette very badly. Cold turkey is how you do it. There's no glamour to it, and no magic tricks. You just have to want it. Quote
I.rar Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 i started smoking e cigarettes and havnt looked back. working my way to lighter strength liquids until im vaping 0 mg. it is kind of hard with all the delicious juices though.  if youre interested...  http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/forum.php Quote
aquaholic Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 stay away from other smokers as much as possible. That is key!!! for the first month or so when you see a person smoking. youll think about how nice it would be to light up. Even a person smoking on tv will make you want to smoke. Quote
jherm87 Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 When I say classify yourself a non smoker, cold turkey is what I mean. As dumb as it sounds I started in the middle of the winter each time I started back up. Be it boredom or holiday stress, ie. 15 hr shiftd at work and everything to go with it. With the old lady not smoking you have all your motivation right there, she may not like your edginess the first three months or so, but in the end you will both be happier. Brush your teeth a little more, the cleaner my mouth is the less I want one. Let us know your progress, I'm about a month into this time without one Quote
Topwaterspook Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 The only thing that worked for me was hypnotism. That was 26 years ago. It still is the very best money I ever spent. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I wish you the best in quitting. I hope it works for you. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Quitting was pretty easy for me. Â At the time, my doctor had me on a medication that had a toxic reaction with nicotine. Â The first few months it was relatively easy, as I was scared and believed the warnings that came with the medication. Â At work, I stayed in the non-smoking break room, didn't hand with the smokers on break. Â One summer evening, after a few beers on my deck, a cigarette didn't sound so bad. Â I Â had 2. Â The next day I was sick as a dog, lethargy & puking for12 or so hours. Â Â Haven't had a cig since. Â I am around alot of cigarette smoke at work, but it doesn't bother me so much as long as I don't get it right in the face. Â I'm not on that medication any more, but I don't want anything to do with a cig. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Agree with cold turkey and for me it was about not putting myself in teh same situations where i smoked. I was pretty lucky in that i never had an addiction to the nicotine as i would go weeks at a time without smoking and it was never an issue.  I stil light up once in a while but i have never gotten to the point where i need one. Quillback Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Cold turkey. I smoked 20 years 2-3 packs a day towards the end. Chewed a lot of gum for maybe a year. That was back in 1999 and haven't smoked since. I don't know how anybody can afford to smoke. A pack of smokes in Chicago cost $10-$12. I was a pack a day smoker for 10 years. Took several attempts, but finally quit by going Cold Turkey. One motivating factor, as mentioned above, is think of the money you'll save. Once you've quit, you'll realize what a nasty habit smoking is. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 21, 2013 Super User Posted August 21, 2013 Please quit smoking. I lost one older brother to smoking. My other older brother is crippled because of cigarettes. His veins are all clogged up. I'm the only son out of four brothers who doesn't have clogged veins. In my family that's rare. I just lost 60lbs on my own. I have another 60/100lbs to go. My point is I love good food not junk food and if I can give up food you can stop smoking I'm sure if it. Let me be your motivator. Go cold turkey now. Focus on the better things in life go fishing. God bless, bigbill BTW, I look at this way we can live longer or die sooner it's not much of a choice. I started out in January at 390lbs. Right now I'm 330lbs. I'm getting that big gorilla off my back one leg at a time. You can do it too. 1 Quote
CayMar Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 Thanks for all the helpful tips and advice guys I'm going to use the cold turkey method with cinnamon tooth picks as a pacifier. I smoked a couple this morning so tomorrow will have to count as day 1 of being cigarette free. Quote
jherm87 Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Again good luck, don't get too caught up in counting the days, it's just one more thing to disappoint you. don't buy smokes, pay at the pump and stay outside of the gas station. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 Move to MA, they just raised the sin tax on smokes by an extra buck...$10.20 for a pack...thankfully I don't smoke because that would be the reason I'd quit! Quote
craww Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Cold turkey is the way to go.... I understand the ecig thing for the no tar. But nicotine is still your master. (And you look like a goober IMO) I've had a handful of friends switch to the ecigs, and they all ended up back on cigarettes. I hope you can find comfort in me telling you the cravings will get farther and farther apart. Don't count the days, just take one craving at a time; they always pass. I would pop a breathsavers 3 hour mint everytime I craved initially, in time you can train your brain. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 I smoked for almost 20 years, half the time 2/pack days, quit using some left over chantix. Been free for over a year now, after the first month I started to get repulsed by the smell of smoke and that got me to stay away. Quote

Super User Marty Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 Another vote for cold turkey. It took me a few tries, but I finally made it. I had to get by numerous obstacles. Like no smoking the first time in league bowling, or fishing, or at a party, or after sex, and other events associated with smoking. I didn't try to avoid smokers because I knew I couldn't always avoid them  I don't know about others, but I had to keep away from cigarettes 100%. If I took as much as one puff I'd be back to full-time smoking within days.  Good luck. It is said the #1 thing you can do for your health is to quit smoking. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Cold turkey for me. On my last pack, I trashed all smoking related items. Cleaned up butts, empty packs, ashtrays. I broke my last cigarette. Signifying my commitment. Its not something you just do. Its a complete lifestyle change. You will need to adjust everything. Breaks at work, driving, probably people/places you congregate. Great support from family and friends. Have someone you can call when you think youll break down and smoke. Then recognize what triggered that and eliminate it from your day. Good luck Quote
