Hi All! I'm new to the forum and fairly new to fishing as a serious hobby. Sure, I used to go fishing with my dad as a little kid, but now I find myself doing research and going out to the lakes by myself.

I'm looking for a "Froggin' Rod". I've seen that most of you guys will use a heavier rod with heavier braided line to throw your frogs. I've got my line picked out (50-65lb PowerPro) but I can't spend a lot of money on the rod.

Has anyone seen the River Monsters rods and does anyone OWN one? They're fairly cheap (around $25 on eBay) but is it a case of "you pay for what you get"?

Any info is appreciated! Thank you!

That rod is glass, fiberglass that is and you don't want that for frog fishing. What kind of money are you willing to spend, it doesn't have to be much but you aren't going to get anything for frog fishing for $25. For $50 bucks you can get either a 7' MH or a 7'6" H Abu Garcia Vengeance, Abu Garcia rods are a little more powerful than their rating so the MH Vengeance would work for frogging. For $65 you can get a Daiwa Ballistic in a 7'1" Heavy that would work but if you are looking for anything lower than 50 bucks then keep looking on ebay, you may find something used but look for a rod with a minimum length of 6'10" up to about 7'6" in a heavy power with a fast or moderate fast action.

I think that's more along the lines of something I should get. Is it really better to go with a HEAVY rod?

That will be ok but if you are going to use 50lb braid in slop, pads, heavy weeds, then you will need a MH that is a little stronger than that rod. As I said before, the Abu Rods are a little more powerful so the MH Vengeance is rated 1/4oz to 1oz, it is in between medium heavy and heavy and that would be the lightest rod I would use. Now if you are going to try a frog over light weeds, then you could use that rod. Just so you realize this, heavy isn't referring to the weight of the rod, it is the power, there are heavy power rods that are pretty light so if you are thinking you don't want a heavy rod because it is heavy, that isn't the case, even in a $50 dollar rod.

Thank you for clearing that up. I don't want to pick up a rod to use in light weeds if there is a chance I will be fishing over lillies or in the thick stuff. Might as well grab one of the Abu's or maybe something heavier.

Thank you SO much for the help! I wasn't going to ask at first and that would have been a mistake.

It's a shame that Jeremy Wade has put his name on the River Monsters rod. It's very deceiving. He's a guy that has caught some of the biggest fish I've ever seen but he endorses a rod that can't do the same? Fail.

That River Monsters rod is designed for live-bait presentations, most likely drifting bait under a bobber.  I'm sure it's plenty tough and can handle big fish just fine; it's just that the action isn't the best for frogging.

For reference, power is how stiff the rod is, action is how the rod bends, i.e., in the tip or evenly throughout the rod blank.  Read this:  http://www.***.com/guides/rodselection.html

What you want is probably a 7' or longer heavy-power, fast-action or extra-fast-action rod.  In spinning rods that's not very common, though you might be able to find one.  The closest I can find are the Daiwa Aird or Procyon.  The 6'6" MH/X-Fast Aird sells for $50, the 7' MH/X-Fast Procyon for $70.  Both are rated for lures up to 1oz.  The Procyon will make a better frog rod thanks to the greater length.

And here I thought we might be discussing the rods that Jeremy Wade uses. The guys got me on a river fed dam that is an old gravel put going down a few hundred feet tossing live bait hoping to say "Fish On" no luck, but the locals all tell me there's a creature unlike any other who feeds on the souls of young children.

Every lake around here that has an outlet supposedly has catfish so big divers are afraid to work on the dam or the size of a small car. Of course one of the lakes in Kansas did produce the world record flathead of 123 pounds. Not the size of a small car but I wouldn't be surprised if a flathead that big wouldn't look like it was the size of a car if someone came face to face with it in dirty water.
