I have some rods and reels that I would like help to see if they "fit" for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, bass jigs or artificial lures.

the reels I have to work with are:

Quantum IR3 5:2 to 1

Abu Garcia Cardinal 101 5:1 to 1

Sigma bcb 5:1 to 1

Shimano curado cu 201 (but I do not know the gear ratio)

Daiwa PL-100 ( I do not know the gear ratio)

The rods I have to work with are:

Tenacity AP TENAPC661M ( I cannot find anything about the rod action)

Daiwa Heartland X HL x 76THPB ( I cannot find anything about the rod action)

Daiwa Heartland HL 701MHRB ( I cannot find anything about the rod action)

BASS Pro Shops Crankin Stick cs762mt-t ( I think I have the right information)

Action: Fast Line Weight: 8-17 lbs.
Lure Weight: 1/4 - 5/8 oz

I wish I could contribute more information and I hope you guys can help me pair up these. I just figured that rods and reels go together like pb&j.

just an update to the above post, I did not know if I needed to start another post, but since I am the OP, I thought it would be okay to just add to this post. I bought 2 more rods, rarely used, I know I got a great deal on but I am having trouble finding info about them. They are both BPS PQT1070MHT IM8 rods. Anyone know what it was sold with?

As I stated in other posts, I have always fished with live bait, and this year i am really getting into not fishing with live bait. I spent the summer fishing with everything under the sun. Now that summer is over, I feel very educated but still need some advice.

to add to the above post I corrected (updated it below)

what i now have set up

Quantum IR3 5:2 to 1 (LH) 8lb flouro / Tenacity AP TENAPC661M / lipless crankbaits

Abu Garcia Cardinal 101 5:1 to 1 (spinning reel) 8lb flouro / BASS Pro Shops Crankin Stick cs762mt-t / crankbaits, i reallly like the feel of this combo.

Sigma bcb 5:1 to 1 (RH) 8lb flouro / BPS PQT1070MHT IM8 / shaky heads

Shimano Bantam curado cu 201 LH ( i think its a 6:1 to 1) 8lb flouro / BPS PQT1070MHT IM8 / bass jigs

Daiwa PL-100 RH 4:2 to 1 ( 10 lb mono) / Daiwa Heartland X HL x 76THPB / for topwater and spinnerbaits

any advice of the above will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you're off to a good start. A lot of this will boil down to personal preference, so I say if you can catch fish with it, go for it.

You dont really need to know the gear ratio, you can spool some line on the reel and measure inches per turn which is just as good if not better information to have.

You have mostly low gear ratio reels (5.x:1 & 4.x:1) 6.x:1 is middle gear ratio reel, obviously. 7.x:1, 8.x:1, & 9.x:1 are higher gear ratio reels. Low geat ratios have the torque and less inches per turn (IPT). That is great for crankbaits. Middle gear ratios have both torque and speed, more IPT than lower gear ratio ratios. Pretty much an all around reel. High gear ratio reels have higher IPT than low & middle gear ratios, less torque and lots of speed. It's great for jigs.

Since you have descriptions of the rods and the info I just listed, you can now pair the rod and reels.

thanks for all the info, I am going fishing Sunday (more than likely), will report back with results.

thank you in advance for reading my post.

so, and it may be me, i caught 1 fish, maybe you guys can help me understand why this happened

I took 4 rods and the multiple problems i had were after fishing this for a while,

1. the line started to create a groove/dip in the center of the spool - eventually when reeling all the line went to this point and then i got a bunch of knots and the line got tangled.

2. i was throwing 15+ crankbaits and when I switched to a shallow runner the line backlashed - i could not get the back lash out. The lesson I learned was to tighten the spool control mechanism when going to a lighter crankbait.

3. on the spinning reel the line kept unspooling

so my question - I wonder if I need to go to a heavier line line, I have used 17lb and didnt like the feel, i dropped down to 12lb, then 8lb. I may try 10lb flouro - would that help with the groove problem on the lines?

below is the actual setup for each rod and reel and the problems specific to each setup

1. Quantum IR3 5:2 to 1 (LH) 8lb flouro / Tenacity AP TENAPC661M / lipless crankbaits - after fishing this for a while, the line started to create a groove/dip in the center of the spool - eventually when reeling all the line went to this point and then i got a bunch of knots and the line got tangled.

2. Daiwa PL-100 RH 4:2 to 1 ( 10 lb mono) / Daiwa Heartland X HL x 76THPB / for topwater and spinnerbaits - in using the rod, i was throwing 15+ crankbaits and when I switched to a shallow runner the line backlashed - i could not get the back lash out. The lesson I learned was to tighten the spool control mechanism when going to a lighter crankbait.

3. Sigma bcb 5:1 to 1 (RH) 8lb flouro / BPS PQT1070MHT IM8 / shaky heads - same as #1 the line started to create a groove/dip in the center of the spool - eventually when reeling all the line went to this point and then i got a bunch of knots and the line got tangled.

4. Shimano Bantam curado cu 201 LH ( i think its a 6:1 to 1) 8lb flouro / BPS PQT1070MHT IM8 / bass jigs - i actually changed to swimbaits and this is what I caught the 1 bass on.

My Abu Garcia Cardinal 101 5:1 to 1 (spinning reel) 8lb flouro / BASS Pro Shops Crankin Stick cs762mt-t / crankbaits, i reallly like the feel of this combo. - the line kept unspooling - any idea?

Try respooling with braid. The memory in the fluoro can cause it to jump off the spool in big coils, but remember to keep that fluoro that you take off and use it as a leader. And a little off topic but you were asking about the gear ratio, that spinning reel is probably getting really close to the same inches per turn as your bantam.

so if i want to go back to braid, its 30lb to be the same diameter to 8lb mono? correct?

also the bantam is my 2nd favorite, so that makes sense that it is close to the spinning reel in IPT.
