Soo... I was cleaning/organizing my tackle bag and I think I dropped a 7/16 oz. Jig. I'm pretty sure my dog ate it. He hasn't been acting weird or anything, but I'm terrified It will mess him up internally.

Anybody run into this before and have any advice. I know I should probably just take him to the vet and get xrayed, but I really don't want to spend the $200 if he in fact didn't eat the jig.

Ya, stop asking the advise of strangers on the internet and CALL THE VET NOW PARTNER!!! While you waiting for the vet to schedule an X-ray, look for that jig.

That jig poses two dangers, led poisoning and internal damage from the hook. Tell your vet it's an emergency

that's a pretty big jig.  What kind of dog?  What trailer were you using?

Count up your 7/16 jigs.  I'm pretty sure you'd remember if you dropped one or not.

You are gonna have to spend that $200 for the sake of the dog, I definitely would no questions asked

We can't help

Take your dog to the vet and spend the $200

It sounds to me like you're pretty sure he did swallow it .

Take it to the vet. A lot worse things you can spend $200 on if it turns out he did not eat it. If he did and you do not take him to the emergency vet it could be fatal to your dog.

Get him to the vet ASAP. Swallowing a fish hook can be extremely fatal if immediate action isn't taken. I surely hope for the dog's sake that he didn't eat it, but if he did a vet should be able to take care of it. I had a dog that swallowed a bunch of sewing needles and had to have surgery. He ended up fine but you have to get him to a vet to get him help.

Buddy of mine had a dog eat a treble hook with livers when we were catfishing once. Vet told him to give the dog lots of bread and cheese and hope it packs in around the hook so he could pass it. Hopefully the weedguard will do it's job and keep the jig from hooking anything.

Hope you're dog is safe! My dog once ate a firecracker and I thought with all the gunpowder(I think they make it from something else) would mess her up. Luckily nothing happened.

Obviously you're not a jig fisherman. I have boxes full of jigs and would have no idea if one disappeared.

I had a dog eat a cork from a wine bottle once, did exactly what a cork is supposed to do! Blocked him right at the point from the stomach to the intestines. Funny part of that was it was from a winery that has a dog as its mascot........... cork said "WOOF" on it!

Surgery required, dog recovered nicely!!

Hope everything works out with your pup!

If $200 is too much, .22 bullets are cheap and you can pick a new dog up from the animal control for 35 bucks....shoot(no pun intended) you could even get a good hunting dog for $200. One that eats crap like jigs doesn't seem to be the smartest dog anyway. Plus with a jig I am not so sure it will even pass once in the stomach, many animals eat things like stones to help aid in digestion, albeit most are herbavors or birds that I have read do this. But point is it may be too heavy to pass and sit in the guy, thus the lead would be a concern.

I got one better. My dog swallowed a quarter and crapped out two dimes and a nickel.

Seriously dude...that's your response? Smh. That's about as mean as it gets. But what do I expect, we are in a "throw away" society. ...truck breaks down, easy get a new one. Marriage gets tough, g

Get a divorce. School or college gets hard, drop the class or drop out. Work gets tough, quit. Dog gets seriously injured, or in this case, has the POSSIBILITY, of being injured, kill it and buy a new family pet.

MCS, I seriously hope you were being facetious...otherwise that's about as mean and cruel as it gets. When an owner decides to take in an animal it is for thick and thin and for care for the dog, not until is costs a little money, you should be ashamed to even have wrote that. Where's your heart dude...I hope it's not in your wallet

That's all.

I figured I would ruffle a few feathers from the bleeding heart fur mommies. I am half serious though. What I am pointing out that society puts its animals above a human, and that after all it is just a dog. I would rather him put the dog down then let it hobble around wondering. The vets these days are a joke. If this man cannot afford a vet then do the right thing and he is at no fault. I got a long sad story about how rediculous these surgeries etc are for animals, the money people tick away for a dog that can be replaced, the breeding and over population is staggering why spend money on an animal that is injured when you can give a healthy one a home.

You bring up money, people love to use this as a means make themselves feel better. I am not going to drop my savings on an animal. Which surgery can cost thousands and you have to come to the realization that you made a mistake a) I shouldn't own another dog or B) I will not repeat the same mistake again.

I refrain from using the word family pet. A dog is more serious than a hamster while it is included in the family it is NOT part of the family. Therefore I treat them as such. It is often forgot dogs were bred for a purpose once upon a time and most weren't as companions.

I do take exception to the use of the term cruel, if I said hook it up to a battery and electrocute it that would be cruel. I mentioned a humane way to dispatch an animal. Fact of the matter is I chose to pay the humane society to put my sick dog down. And I regret listening to the vet and letting if suffer, and in the future if any one of my animals shall become burden with an illness or old age to the point they are dibilitated I will go ahead and skip the vet and the meds and put it out of its misery.

For the fact of the matter I don't think you people realize the meds dogs are given or the side affects. We tend to assume it is like our doctor. I caution you to read before you give them meds. There are a ton of herbal/holistic remedies that have no toxic affects.

I don't think you or most folks will understand. The rest of the junk you wrote regarding throw away etc. is far from me. Those here that know me know I have a heart for my God, my family and my fellow man. While I do very much like animals, I have great respect for them, there is a line that is draw and they will never be in that catagory. I find it ashame that in society too many people fail make a distinction.

While i do see that you are not in the throw away society, i still beleive that this is not the answer for this particular case. I have no problem with an owner dispatching an animal or a pet for the animals own good if death or suffering is iminent, as I have done so...many times. As recently as a year ago i put down four puppies that had advanced parvo (with a .22)

In this particular case, I took exception to it because we dont even know the faacts of the case yet and there was your response. As far as we know we are only talking about gettting an X Ray.

As for dogs as family pets or parts of the family, i will respectfully disagree. I refuse to spend thousands as some would, but 200 bucks for an X ray is a reasonable. I have found myself in the situation where i can spend 3600$ on a surgery for a dog ive had for 9 years or put it down, you can guess which route i chose,

MCS, i guess i just took offense to how quickly to jumped to "put the dog down" rather than take the dog to the vet and see what the problem really is and the look at options to solve it.

MCS, i have been reading your posts and comments for a good while and i do respect yyour opinions and I do not think ill of you, i guess it caught me the wrong way.

Whatever you reason for posting this stupid inhumane response, I'll never know. But you've got the smarts of a bucket of rocks.

Any animal rescue can help out or take the dog from you and not have to kill it. You obviously have no heart for a family pet.

In my line of work, usually nothing amazes me, but today, not so much

Appreciate the clarification. I might have jumped on your reply a little hard myself

And admittedly I did sorta use the topic to get a point or idea out there that is a sore subject of mine. To the OP I appologise.

I understand what you are saying Teal figure out if the dog is in distress. In hindsight believe the OP should spend the $200 to figure out if the dog is injured the. If need be make the decision between surgery or putting it down. I didnt mean to just shoot the dog cuz it ate the jig, I meant if it was in distress or showing signs.
