does anyone have any luck with the Rapala Rippin' Rap?

 

I throw lipless cranks quite a bit, mainly the strike king lures, with great success.

 

but when it comes to the rapala ones.......not so much

Then why change?? I don't like Rapala products.

change?  i dont change at all.  i buy numerous cranks all the time to just try them.  but the rippin rap is just one i never have success with.  just checking to see if its just me or if others have the same results.

 

how can you NOT like Rapala?  besides the price.  I am liking strike king more and more as time goes on.........but its mainly cause of price.

i've had some success with it but nothing compared to red eye shads. i only bought a few rippin raps and don't plan on buying more.

I've always been a fan of Rapala products. I've had success with Rallting Raps, but am not familiar with the Rippin'. But from just looking at it, I can't see a reason why they shouldn't catch fish.

 

Have you alternated lipless crankbaits in the same place to compare one against the other?

My issue with the rippin rap is it had a tight wiggle doesn't put out a lot of vibration and doesn't have much resistance in the water. But the bait wasn't designed to do that stuff it's meant for fishing through grass which IMO is where this bait should be used most.

They catch fish for me plus havent got any bad ones so far cant say that for a number of my RES. My good RES though catch the fish as well.  No reason for me not to continue use of both. Its a different profile more compact yet nearly = weight, like mentioned little less vibes but in clear pressured lake that can be beneficial at times.  

 

In thread above very good used around shore rocks that got flooded finish held great RES would be naked from same use.

I don't. I bought one at a flea market, so it only cost me two bucks to find out that it had no wobble at all at any speed, slow, fast, ripped... maybe I just got a dud, who knows? I kept the hooks and used them to replace the crappy stock hooks one of my Cordell Super Spots, which work great for me.

I have a bunch of Rapala lipless cranks that catch nothing. SK Red Eyes, SK Diamond Shads, Yo Zuri Vibes, and Cordell Spots all produce. But the Rapala version? Nothing. I don't know what the difference is, but this is the only rapala that I flat out refuse to fish anymore.

I'd stick to the bait that does good for you and that gives you confidence. I personally prefer the red eye shad over any other lipless crank bait out there.

I have no clue why it took rapala to start offering rattles in there lures. There original floaters, shad raps, jointed minnow countdown have been always successful.

I know we're talking lipless cranks. Just purchased the strike king and the other hot one I think it's Excalibur that was mentioned before. But what about the rattle traps these still work like old faithful. I always end up with a mix of everything. I know the newer stuff on the market looks good and sounds good too. But I won't throw or give away my old rattle traps just yet.

I will second the strike king red eye shad lipless cranks that perform well.  I always have success with them.

 

not to mention, the SK's are cheaper than the rapalas!!

 

well it sounds like they dont perform from a number of members.....

I had a rippin rap and never got nothing but the lipless my buddy built (that thing was awesome) and the xcaliburs both produced. I am curious though about the clacking lipless rapala makes or any of their clacking stuff for that matter as I throw mostly the original and countdowns. I might try one of those soon.

Never fished a rippin rap, but have had decent success on a black back rattlin rap. Caught 4 1-2 pounders in 6 casts one day with it. Never hauled in anything much bigger than that on it though.

The bait is designed to be ripped. Was first designed by great lakes anglers but works equally well for bass/walleye throughout the country. Let it fall and rip it up 2-3 feet, let it fall and rip it up 2-3 feet. UP not forward. It is a reaction strike bait. It is not meant to be reeled. 

 

Make sure you use the bait in its intended manner before you knock it. Reminds me of a review i saw once on a LC sammy. The guy gave it 1 star because it never dove under the surface.

I like rat-l-traps and super spots.  The only Rapala I have ever had any luck with was the broken minnow.

I like rattle baits but I've never had any success with any of them that Rapala put out. I prefer the Xcaliber XR50 and XRK50.

Let 'em sink to the bottom and rip them up or even vertical jig with them like a blade bait or jigging spoon.  That's what they are good for.  Smallmouth love them, especially in the metallic colors.

 

As far as fishing them as a regular lipless I'd rather fish a red eye shad, excaliber or rapala clackin' rap.

I never have luck with lipless crank baits. I use the strike king sexy shad and never really have luck my buddy pulls fish in left and right with them
