coak Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 I live in Ohio and have never seen anything like that. Any chance that's a baby snakehead? Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Ive never caught one, but I looked in the New York freshwater fishing regulations guide and it looks like a Burbot. Similar looking to a snakehead. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ohiogamefishing.com%2Fcommunity%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D174026&h=0&w=0&sz=1&tbnid=AaAf6YHyAsacfM&tbnh=216&tbnw=234&zoom=1&docid=LmxNHwojEn56LM&ei=cDIRUq_XOqr84APlpIDQCQ&ved=0CAIQsCU Quote

I thought that for a second, but the color patern of the snakehead is not present. It was a weird little thing. It had a mouth like a largemouth, big and wide open, but its head was flattened, just like a flathead. The burbot thing is a possibility, but the coloration seems different there too. LC Quote
VolFan Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Probably a species of eel. They're around. Catch it on a worm? Quote
loudcherokee Posted August 18, 2013 Author Posted August 18, 2013 Probably a species of eel. They're around. Catch it on a worm? yup. live redworm. after looking at the pa fish and wildlife website, and based on where I caught it, it does appear to be a burbot. LC Quote

Super User Marty Posted August 19, 2013 Super User Posted August 19, 2013 I was gonna say bowfin, but that underside fin looks very burbotlike. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted August 19, 2013 Super User Posted August 19, 2013 It's not a bowfin. I've caught them before. Bowfin have 4 fins on their bellies, not one long fin. I looked at images of burbot and it doesn't look like that either. Looks similar to images of a freshwater eel. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 19, 2013 Super User Posted August 19, 2013 Burbot, eelpout, lawyer.... Lota lota http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burbot They can get pretty big. Quote
