Time To Respool A Reel, Looking For Opinions

This is for a ML spinning setup i use mostly for finesse plastics. I've had stren 4lb mono on it for the last year and caught quite a few bass along with trout and some cats and its been fine. But its getting pretty low and I had a break off at the boat of what could've been a PB smallie the other day. The drag was probably a little too tight but we'll ignore that. Im thinking of trying a FC for the first time as a mainline. The increased sensitivity would be great for weightless stuff.

 

I have 8lb YZ on a different spinning setup and it is very strong, broke a few hooks with it. But not very supple even after repeated KVD line/lure treatments. I would assume the 4lb would be more supple and strength closer to 8lb maybe? Any experience with 4/6 YZ and manageability?

 

My only experience with FC is using Pline leaders and no issues there. I saw the thread for inexpensive FC lines, and will check that out also.

 

So what would be the better choice for this application? and the reel is a quantum plazma size 30.

I use 6lb YZ hybrid on my m/l spinning outfit and love it.  Just as you said above, use KVD L&L

Plastics would lean me towards hybrid or a higher quality fluoro. I think Invizx works pretty well on spinning reels.

Personally I'm a bit leery regarding knot strength of fluoro.  Having said that, the one time I did have to break 10# fluoro from a snag, it didn't break at the knot (to the best of my knowledge).  Read the fluorocarbon articles on tackletour.  I would want a soft line for use on spinning reels.  If I remember correctly, soft lines don't have the abrasion resistance of the harder ones.

 

Flurocarbon line is one place where I wouldn't be skimping.  Might not buy the most expensive, but would definitely try to purchase one of the higher rated lines.....which always seem to be the more costly ones.

 

Or you could give braid a try.

I have been having very good luck with 8lb seaguar red label (6lb dia) on my spinning rods for bass and walleye. Very subtle and silky.

i actually used braided 20lb once.. actually hit something on a cast, backlashed, but my lure still flew out there, then the line tightened down onto itself and actually cut my line off as my lure just kept on going out into the lake.. because it was so thin i was also having problems of pieces of the line working itself under other parts of the line or between the spool and frame at times... so i tore it all off... thought to myself.. why am i even using braid? i could set up to 12lb and still get well over 100 yards on this thing, and at $2 for 500 yards of mono, it doesnt matter how much of it i break or tangle

 

so now, i just get a bulk 12lb monofilament spool which is of a diameter both my reel and my rod was designed for... my other alternative was 50lb braided at that same diameter, but then what fun is fishing if theres no fight?

i put 10pd vanish on my spinning reel i hooked one about 4 pounds and it held up good with a little drag pull, and make sure tie a good knot i use the pull tight knot cant remenber the name but im sure someone will chime in tell you a good one. i would like try braid soon just not sure what pound but i do no suffix is awesome in 50 pound for frogs.

Count me among the 10lb braid crew.

 

I use 10lb braid mainline on all my spinning gear and can use any type of leader depending on the conditions. You can use short leaders, or long leaders (Gary Yamamoto uses long leaders on his spinning gear).

 

IMHO, best of all worlds that gives you a great variety to fish. Go super light leader of 2lb test up to 20lb or whatever. 10 lb braid is very strong, supple, no memory or line management issues to speak of. 10lb PowerPro has diameter of 2lb mono, so you can get a lot of it spooled up on UL, L, and M sized reels.

 

Try the original PowerPro, or the new PowerPro Slick 8 which a lot of folks really like.

 

And learn to tie a good leader knot and you'll never worry about breakage. I use the Albright normally, sometimes Uni-to-Uni. I am 100% confident in my knots. Never a worry that they're the weak point in the link. Caught my PB in thick slop using 10lb braid + leader!

if I were you i'd try braid, but make sure you buy some fluoro or fluoro leaders to make a 3 ft leader with. 8 or 10 lb braid should be perfect for what you want to be using. i've been using the sunline sx1 braid in 10 lb on my medium light setup and it's worked perfectly

I use a 10 or 15lb braid with a 6 to 8lb Invisx leader the length of my rod

Take a look at Blackwater Solaroam Bass-Hi Class Toray FC line. Low memory, very strong about $13 per 85 yards. The 5 lb is 0.0077D , 6 lb 0.0086D. Compare line by diameter not advertised lb test.

But the fact you already have a PP spooled reel, you can buy several spools of ... whatever ... and tie on a leader length of each to experiment. Cheaper to tie on leaders than to respool an entire reel. Again, IMO.

 

So for finesse applications, I use 10lb PP and leaders anywhere from 6 to 15 pounds. Anything from pure fluoro to copoly lines. Tie on 4, 6, 8, 10, 20, 30 feet of a leader if you want. I think you'll find it the best of all worlds.

I get what you are saying, i think, and agree. I have 15lb and 6lb pline fc leader material that i already use with my bc braid setup and swap as needed.

 

I wonder though if there will be a noticeable sensitivity increase when using straight flouro/hybrid vs braid w/leader. From what i've read, FC allows better sensitivity for slack presentations, like a weightless worm for example. I use plastics alot weightless and weighted. It seems to me having a single material to travel through might transmit more fishyness to the rod. I don't know. Thats why im here.

If it's manageability, strength, and a line that can be reversed for extra life, a light braid would be my choice.  I don't see too much point in prepping the line with a conditioner, having to troll the line out after an outing, braid in lieu of mono or copoly reduces that extra time and expense.  Any mono or copoly off the rack will handle lmb and smallmouth, I used trilene xl for years when I lived in Michigan.  If it's testing yourself go with Ande tournament. There are times where I do use mono or copoly, but not on a small spinning reel fishing for fun.

I have couple different spinning rods. One has braid in 15lb test. Works Really good and sometimes I will throw on a co-poly leader if I think it will help and I only make it long enough so it doesn't go onto spool. Just my 2 cents

I went with yo zuri 4lb. found a 600yd spool for cheap online and should arrive by the end of the week. I was surprised my larger, local outdoor stores didn't carry it (cabelas and sportsmans).
