Looking For A Vise To Tie Jigs

Anyone know of one that will hold up to 5/0 hooks? I've been looking at White River Fly Shop® Crown Spring Tenson Vise.

I really don't know anything about the vice you mentioned, however I bought my second vice at BPS and it was a Griffen Spider vice. About $100. I like the vice very much and all I tie is bass jigs.

Just looking at that vice now, it says it will hold upto a 4/0, can you squeeze a 5/0 into it?

 have the same Griffin Spider vise, $85 bucks, made in U.S.A. , and it has a lifetime warranty but it is also a rotary vise which is something I will never do without again. I got it because I use larger hooks as does Cadman and the Griffin spider will hold a 5/0 depending on which hook and what you are doing. For example, I can put a Mustad 32798 flat eye hook in 5/0 and ties with no problem, if I use a 32786 then I can still use it but I have to watch as it will slip a bit when cinching down.  It is about the best vice you can get for larger hooks without spending a ton, for example most other vises you need to buy a separate set of jaws, the Peak vise I was looking at I had to spend an addition $55 dollars on a jaw set for larger hooks on top of the $300 for the vise. Let me know what you are tying and I can tell you if the Griffin will be right for you.

I'm starting a small custom bait business (Bass jigs, airbrushed crankbaits/jerkbaits, hand carved swimbaits that sort of stuff). Most of the jigs i'd be using would just come from fishing skirts . com unpainted.

So what are you going to use the vise for?? Are you going to use it to hold a jig or crankbait to paint?  Or are you going to tie jigs? If you want to hold cranks in order to paint then just go to a craft store and by exacto knife handles, they work well for holding cranks and the jigs you could do with a simple rack made with wire or dowels. The other bit of advise I have has to do with saving you money so don't get mad, but you can do a lot better and have a higher profit margin getting unpainted jigs from a different source. I really like the quality of the BOSS jigs but they are way over priced for blanks, you end up having to charge more money than guys that pour  them, check out LPO (lure parts online), they sell a lot of different jigs with high quality heads and you can get bulk pricing, you can also get them completely finished just tell them what you want.

If you are wire tying the 5/0 flipping hooks the griffin will work fine, if you are thread tying and doing all 5/0 hooks you will need something more expensive with extra jaws. As I said, I tie a 1/2oz jig with a 5/0 Mustad 32798 and I have no problems with it slipping but something like a really heavy wire like a 32768 may slip if using thread and cinching down wire should be ok as you really don't put pressure on the vise. I would also look at everything you plan to do, if all your jigs are going to 5/0 then yeah, you need a different vise but if you intend to do some in 5/0 and others in 4/0 and down then the griffin is a good deal.

 

EDIT: JezHogg, Griffin has the Montana Pro vise, it takes up to a 7/0 and is only $78.00, that looks to the perfect vise for what you are going to do!

Ya, I was planning on using the 5/0 for flipping, and tying bucktail jigs upto about 5/8 oz max.
