coak Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I'm looking to start throwing more squares since I primarily fish a shallow, quick moving river. My question is what power rating and action rating would be ideal for throwing 1/4-1/2 oz. square cranks. I know for other cranks you want either a M or MH/Mod or Mod-Fast. I just don't think that would be good, but I honestly have no idea. Therefore I'm looking to you all to set me straight. Thanks, Coak Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 Medium power moderate action would be my choice. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Med power is sufficient. If you're crashing cover I like a little faster (as in mod/fast) for the shallow cranks. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I don't split my rod's power when it comes to any cranks, they all get moderate. Quote

coak Posted August 17, 2013 Author Posted August 17, 2013 Thanks all for the input. I have rods in both med/mod and m/f. That is the reason for my question. I will try the m/mod and see how it handles. Thanks again for the help. Coak Quote
bass1980 Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 I tend to like MH Mod for square bill banging them off rocks and branches. Quote

Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 17, 2013 Super User Posted August 17, 2013 Medium power moderate action would be my choice. Even with baits like the 4S and 2.5 size? Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 17, 2013 Super User Posted August 17, 2013 I like the larger square bills so I prefer a MH with a mod fast action, a fast action is ok on a medium power rod as it will have enough forgiveness to keep you from pulling the hooks out. I found the moderate action cranking rods to be too soft for my style but depending on how you use the square bill it is an option. Quote
