Flukes

I bought two packs of flukes the other night, and used one yesterday. I caught a fish. The way I was fishing it was sorta like the way I fish my senkos. Reeling it in with twitches and pauses. I also reeled it with a steady retrieve, just to experiment a little bit. It sorta had a wobble, or swimming action to it. How are you guys fishing your flukes? Also, can use have success with a fluke on a weighted t-rig?

Weightless on a 3/0 lately, hooked upside down. They have a very good wobble when reeled steady and the tail really wiggles on the fall. Always pearl white for me.

I am going to try weighted. Sounds like fun.

I use SK caffeine shads mostly. I like the heavier weight and the flutter on the fall is killer. I rig them weightless on a 4/o or 5/o. I fish them as a jerkbait mainly. If the bite is really tough and slow ill go to a dead sticking method. They make a jr size as well.

IMO SK caffeine shad>zoom fluke. 4/0 hook T-rigged weightless. Two twitches and pause. Watch your line!

I don't like the fall with a Texas rig. I rig them on a 1/4oz Moaner Stroker hook (Rage Rig). I prefer a horizontal fall over vertical.

I generally run flukes weightless unless I have some moving water or high wind. Weightless makes for a more erratic action and you can work the bait more in one specific are longer weightless over weighted.

I like to fish them fast just below the surface when fish are chasing shad in the fall, really kills them some days.

The ones I've had the most success with are the Zoom flukes in pearl white, I Texas rig em with a 3/0 hook and a 1/8 ounce bullet weight and reel steady or tie 2 medium size split shot about 8 inches above the fluke and basically hop it quickly up and down.

I T-rig the Zoom Super Flukes weightless as they are heavy enough for my taste by themselves. I like the Jr. size in pearl white a lot as well, and if I want some extra weight I will embed a small finish nail into it after it's rigged on the hook, or use a weighted hook as has been suggested; I don't like the way it falls with a bullet weighted nose. I have also had good success using them with a split shot or mojo rig, but the real advantage of these baits is the way the tail wiggles as they fall on the pause; nothing that swims can ignore it completely.

 

Dip them in boiling water to straighten them out does make a difference, and rig them as straight as you can for best action. Flukes are my favorite plastic; you should have a blast. Good luck!

I've read so many great things, and how so many people love to fish them. I've been throwing them a few months now with no luck whatsoever, not even a bite! What gives?

Don't blame yourself, sometimes it's just a lack of fish cooperation.  Stick with it and do what Catt says, you'll be killing them in no time.

My best fluke color is disco violet, maybe because I just use it more than the others.

Strike king 3x flukes with a weighted jerkbait hook. Short jerks and pauses.

I love to dead stick them.  It's really a rush when a fish takes that bait and you see the line start taking off.

I like using them on a size 1-2 gammy wide gap finesse hook, nosed hooked and twitched them like a jerkbait and or walk the dog with it.  I just like watching the action of the lure and start of fast and slow down to a dying minnow/shad.

I see a lot of people catching big fish on flukes I just can't seem to get the hang of em. I caught a couple nothing big tho.

Started using flukes for chain pickerel 4 yrs ago, and soon found out how well smallmouth like them. We don't have largemouth here in my province but on a recent trip to Maine I had a fluke tied onto one of my rods at all times. The largemouth in maine were all over those flukes.

The only fluke I've tried is the Gitzit Fat 3.5" in Chartreuse S/P, nose hooked with a small jig.  I like the way it swims upon retrieval (like a dolphin) but have only caught one 8" LMB with it, from shore, in very shallow, weedy water.  This was long before finding bassresource.

the best way to fish it is in the water, i have rigged them every way i know how and caught fish each time. i do believe that color is pretty important with a fluke, the fish get a good look at it when fishing slow, i have about 10 colors( prob overkill ) but i have found that i can switch colors and go from not a bite to a fish every other cast. my favorite is a weightless t-rig 3/0 hook behind a swivel and 12in leader, my go to colors around here are watermelon red, watermelon seed, baby bass, blueguill, and of course like others have said,pearl white. Also the fish in my pic was caught on a watermelon seed zoom super fluke.
