Paul Peixoto Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 So during this past winter I decided to buy my first baitcaster ,a kvd combo for 100 at bps. Since then I have bought roughly 1 a month, ranging from cheap to fairly pricey.I guess the question is, Do you guys buy just to buy what's new and exciting like me? Or are you fisherman more frugal in your approach? I know it ain't the equipment that catch fish but I just can't resist! Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I have become a lot more frugal as I have gotten older for sure. I research, and research the reels and rods that peak my interest, and once I pull the trigger, these outfits will stay with me for a while. The only thing missing from my arsenal is a Shimano B/C. When my times come I am sure I will also enjoy those reels. Quote
Grantman83 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 When I got into, I bought a rod of every length and action with every brand reel. As I found what I liked, I paired them down into what has worked for me. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 i love having lots of combs to fish with. I tend to "one and done" (at least for the most part) and buy exactly what I want after long research. I hate the "what if" feeling. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 Never. I buy specific equipment that I expect to perform perfectly and last a lifetime. When it comes to baits and lures, I only buy things recommended by guys I know and/or trust. Quote
derekxec Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 i find stuff that can hold up to my abuse and i tend to stick with that...i dont clean my reels or even wash them off lol so they have to hold up to saltwater without a cleaning ever...rods i build mine and i like to try new things on that Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 Started fishing 60 years ago so I realize the latest gear isn't what catches fish. My first pole was a bamboo cane pole with a length of mono attached. Even caught a few fish with it. However, there are so many good rods and reels out there now, and I would love to be able to try them all. Financial impossibility for me. Actually I've spent a lot more than I should have since getting back into fishing 4 years ago. I usually don't go for the latest. I read reviews on tackletour, and thread reviews given on that site and this site. Reviews given on sites such as Cabela's are normally taken with a grain of salt unless it appears the reviewer has lots of experience in which case I'll take it more seriously. I think I picked up 8 rods and 3 reels over the winter. None of them new. None of them the latest models. Well, except or the custom built RX-7 Rainshadow and RX-8....both used but like new. BTW, love both. Many of my reels are past greats. I have several older Daiwas along with a current Zillion, a couple older Chronarchs and a couple older Abu round reels including a couple Morrums. All these reels may be old technology, but suit me just fine, thank you very much. Personally I try to buy rods suitable for all-around use most of the time. Heck, far as I know there isn't a rod made that can only be used for one technique. Obviously some rods do better at many things than others. My combos run from $47 to $440...my cost. Believe it or not, the $47 combo does exceptionally well for the technique I use it for. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I dot like my gear feeling different when I change up so I go with similar equiptment. I am fairly comfortable with what I got and can switch around with it and not worry about retuning or adjusting anything. Quote

You may not change brands, but you do keep on buying. Quote
Cgrinder Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I have been very spendy this year. However, it's been mostly closeout and clearance sales with a few auctions thrown in. I'm still searching for my "ideal" setups. When Lews starts to offer more LH options, I'll probably jump on those. I have been eyeing a Super Duty for a while. The Bait Monkey and I have come to an agreement. He can buy whatever he wants, as long as it is less than retail price. Quote

basshavoc Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Rarely, I buy rods and reels specifically for what i will be using, and only after I have done research on them. Quote

I now just wait for sales and clearances, but I do invest in high end gear now at the same time, but I usually don't sell off my equipment..they usually stick with me for a long time. Quote

Out of the 8-9 setups I regularly use, I might have 1 reel that was purchased new. Most of my rods were new, but I didn't pay anywhere near retail save my one megabass rod. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 17, 2013 Global Moderator Posted August 17, 2013 I used to buy all the new stuff when it came out, now I pick up a couple new combos a year at the most. I've pretty much just gone to buying the nicest stuff I can afford and sticking with quality over quantity. 2 Quote
CrossK Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Not on reels, but definitely on lures haha I go out and buy maybe $50 in new lures every couple of days just because I want to, I have nearly every single lure on the market and I still find stuff that I want haha. Quote
