Capt.Bob Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Yeah, I take it all back. I think the OP screwed up and deserved what he got. Come to think of it, I really enjoy paying the $30 dollar shipping cost. In fact, I'm going to write a letter to both UPS and FedEx to personally thank them for all they do and for making shipping so darned afforable in this day and age. I'll probably also request that they raise the prices because, now that I've read all of this, I have discovered that I am indeed cheating them out of money. I will probably write a similar letter to BP when I get done with those. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways guys!! It's always a pleasure! you make it very easy to understand,,,,,,,,CRYSTAL CLEAR!!! Quote
thehooligan Posted August 16, 2013 Author Posted August 16, 2013 Ok, this thread derailed, lol. Ive shipped my share of rods, ive used usps and fedex. I started using fedex lately cause theres a 24-7 office around here so i can ship out after work and on weekends. I know how to ship rods btw, i ship mine exactly how capt bob said. Im very careful, and i always hope someone is going to do the same when i order a rod. The cardboard tube i used was damage free so i know it wasnt my fault. Worst thing is i payed full price on the rod at $150. Sold it for $100 cause i wasnt using it. Payed $23 to ship it. So i lost out big time on that rod. Filed a claim cause when i saw the tube back on my doorstep it literally looked like the fedex truck drove over it. I got a few really ignorant people on the phone that claimed it was my fault and i now refuse to use them anymore. I have a friend that works for ups and he said rod tubes break all the time. Guys just throw them in the truck, jam them in there, throw heavy items on top of them. That why ill never ship a rod in a cardboard tube again.... Quote
derekxec Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 better to pack your stuff safe and not let them worry about not damaging it....my friend used to work for ups and she unloaded the planes and loaded trucks too and she said most of the people that helped her threw everything around like nothing was breakable even if it said fragile Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 I recently shipped a rod from my house (outside of Kansas City) to Spirit Lake, Iowa. I didn't have a cardboard tube, so I made a shipping tube out of PVC Pipe. 8' of 3" Schedule 40 pipe wonn't fit in my commuter vehicle, so I had to cut it in half and get a part to mate it back together. Anyway, less than $20 for a heavy duty, nearly uncrushable rod tube. Post office wanted $41 to ship it (insured). They said because it was an odd ball length it cost more. UPS shipped it for $14. It got there OK. Strangely enough, even though I asked them to ship me my new rod back in the same tube, my new rod arrived packaged in a card board tube. Someone in the Fenwick customer service department is the proud owner of an 8' heavy duty rod tube made out of 3" schedule 40 plastic pipe. . . . Oh well. . . . On a positive note, I am now the proud owner of a new Fenwick Aetos 7'9" Heavy Action rod. It is ounces lighter than my current A-rig & Frog rod. Quote
Kevin22 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Do you still have the broken rod/tube? Take it with you and go to the fedex store (it was fedex that broke it right?) and file a claim there. Don't even mess with calling them, they won't help you at all. If you go into the store they will help you, and if not ask for the manager and refuse to leave unless you are satisfied. It is obvious they treated it unreasonably rough and broke it. Quote
Super User flechero Posted August 16, 2013 Super User Posted August 16, 2013 As someone that used to ship a lot of rods, I can say that the best option for me was Fedex. If you consider tracking, delivery times and CLAIMS... Fedex was the best service. Sooner or later you will have a claim, so knowing the process was smooth and easy vs. a minimum 12 week whipfest with USPS, the extra few bucks was nothing. As for initial price, they were always within $2 - $5 of USPS and less than UPS. Insurance cost was cheap as well. I've had USPS break sched. 40 tubes... and then acuse me of shotty packaging. I asked if all future shipments should be packed to withstand the weight of being run over by a forklift!! Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 S40 should be available at HomeD, Lowes, and electrical supply houses in your area. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted August 22, 2013 Super User Posted August 22, 2013 $30 shipping will get me just about 8 gallons of gas which won't get me 120 miles.... I'll ship it. 1 Quote

Kevin22 Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 You get less than 15mph highway? So figuring it would cost you right around $75 round trip to drive it there you would be happy paying UPS to ship it there for $70? Quote

It gets between 14 & 17 mpg depending on driving & payload..... Quote
Brian Needham Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I drive a 2013 ram longhorn with the 8 speed V 8...... @70mph I get 20-21 mpg. that said, I shipped a 7 foot rod to texas this week through USPS, the PVC tube was 89 inches, it cost me $15 and change. the shortest driving route was 735 miles.....so I saved a BUNCH of money by shipping it. Super User WRB Posted August 23, 2013 Super User Posted August 23, 2013 Make sure you tie down the rods in the shipping tube and wrap the rod tips with foam or bubble wrap to prevent damage. You can buy a telescoping rod tube, if you plan to ship rods or travel on vacations etc. Tom Quote
