Anyone know where you can buy these with endcaps for shipping rods ? Ive checked out home depot with no luck. I have 4 or 5 high end rods i need to ship out soon and dont want to take chances with cardboard tubes.

I shipped out a brand new powell max in a cardboard tube through fedex and it came back on my doorstep in 3 pieces. Filed a claim and they blamed it on me, lol.

Last time i use cardboard tubes and fedex.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Are you sure they don't have it at home depot?  Every time i have been there they had it and they also have it listed online.  And if they have just the tubing and not an end cap just stuff the ends with packing material and tape over it then slide the entire thing i na cardboard tube and you should be good.

If you are looking for the screw end caps i woudln't worry about that and just slide the cap on the end and tape it before putting it in the cardboard tube.

As far as where else to get it, you can check with plumbing or electrical supply houses.

Thanks, maybe i have it backwards. Might be schedule 20 i need. Whichever one is the thinner wall pvc. I got one before from dobyns, real light and strong.

I wouldn't worry about getting the schedule 20...the schedule 40 is cheap at about $4 for a 10 foot piece of 1" or you could probably use conduit, it's grey and used for electrical not plumbing, as well which for a 1 1/2" piece runs about the same price.  The conduit is more flexible but if you have it in a cardboard tube you will be fine.

If you can use schedule 40. It will probably cost more to ship because of lenght and weight, but if the rods are expensive, they will arrive just fine. Just hope the shipping cost dont eat you up.

I ship rods and so do Dobyns in 2 inch PVC.

any hardware/big box store will have PVC and have them cut it to lenght.

I do not know if you can get 3 rods in 2inch though, you might have to kick it up to 3 inch

USPS is the cheapest and fastest way to ship. I can ship a rod, in PVC from arkansas to California for $18 bucks and it will get there in 3 days max. I have never had an issue with the USPS.

oh and you have to buy the caps separate. pop the cap on and a couple rounds of duct tape will be fine.

under $10 you should have tube and caps ready to ship.

Wow, that is very disappointing indeed.  I hate to see that happen to anyone and that's (was) a nice rod too. It's a shame that they wouldn't step up and take responsibilty for something they obviously did. They charge us ridiculous rates to ship this stuff and then break it...and then turn around and blame us for it??

Unacceptable. Sorry man.

I find the end caps at Lowes without any trouble. They should be in the same area where the PVC tubes are....

Good luck man!

You really think it is riduclous to mail something cross country for $20 -30$?  Sorry but i think it is a pretty good deal myself.  I know i couldn't drive myself and deliver it for that cheap.

And nobody knows how it was broken.  I have seen cardboard tubes get banged up pretty good before and being a round container i am sure it doesn't want to sit right in their trucks both in transport and in the actual delivery.

The OP never said if the cardboard tube was damaged jsut the rod was in pieces so who knows whose fault it really is....

Sorry to derail....

I've shipped enough rods to know how they should be packed and when I pay what I consider a high price..25-30 bucks for a 5 pound package (and the rate is a "balloon charge" because of the shape and length) I expect it to get there in the same shape it was sent out. I paid for that service and it should be performed expertly...that is the business they advertise ....All they do is ship....they should get it right.

Mistakes are made of course and that's what they should own up to. Furthermore, I seriously doubt the OP packed it in a weak, flimsy tube that he thought may or may not make it one piece. He wasn't shipping a cheap rod and I'm sure he fully intended to deliver the product promised.

No, maybe it isn't fair to speak for someone else or say I know exactly how it went down but I'm a gambling man and my bet is on the OP...I think he did exactly what he was supposed to do and got let down by the shipper.... How much are you willing to wager on that one?

Do you really think he would come out and say yeah i packed it like crap?

That is even more silly than saying 25-30 isn't reasonable to ship an oversized, hard to store item cross country.

I seriously doubt anyone packs an item with the intentions of it not making it one piece but with shipping, and anything, experience comes in to play.  Just like i doubt you fish the same way you did when you first started or the first time you change a tire on your car you learn things and do it better and potentially different the next time.

I do see your point and certainly there is never just one side to any story for certain. You're right, it's possible that the OP didn't do a great job of packing it. I'm just saying that I believe most of us on this forum appreciate quality gear and know how to handle it. That goes for shipping it as well. We want a perfect product and I think we all strive to make sure our fellow members get the same thing when we trade and sell items. I always think" if it was me, how quickly would I want this and how exactly would I want to see this item secured when it arrives". I like to think that everyone here has that mentality and so far I've never had an experiece that made me think otherwise.

As far as cost to ship items, I think it's based on other factors than just a standard formula. I do not know what they are but I doubt UPS or FedEx would tell us that. And I know for a fact that they can charge less because they've done it for me. ...So has the post office by the way...

True Story here... I went in to FedEx two weeks ago and the guy at the counter was one that I was familiar with. I had an 8ft tube...I jokingly said, hey it's around 40 inches or so..he laughed and said, OK! He didn't measure it at all. And I shipped that tube to OREGON from Virginia...for $14 bucks....he didn't even measure it.      (I thought this was reasonable)

Now, I went in this week and shipped a rod to Pennsylvania....7 1/2 feet...didn't know the girl at the counter, guess what ?  She measured it, weighed it, and charged me $23 bucks....now, how does this work?  Well, all I know is we are at the mercy of these companies as the common man...they charge what they want and there'snot much we can do but I'll NEVER side with them on anything...that's just me.

I don't mean to argue with you, just stating my opinion as I know that's what you were doing. So, we have differing opinions on the matter. Still a shame to see this happen. I'm sure it could have been avoided no matter who's to blame....now that I will stand by!

Now i see where you are coming from.  It isn't the cost as much as it is the inconsitency of the cost.

I totally agree that nobody wants to be on teh shipping or receiving end of an item that is damaged in transit.

I actually had a fed ex package delievered to me that was supposed to be 2 50" thule bars.  I received the item with one end busted out and obvisouly no bars.  How the crap do you lose a set of bars lol

Luckily the seller/shipper was cool and refinded me some of my money and was then later reimbursed by fed ex.

I have shipped rods for years in cardboard tubes and never once had a problem, I split a swim noodle down the side and use about 6' to 10" long and wrap the tip end with it, and the center of the rod, and the very but end of the grip, any material will work from a rag to plastic grocery bags, will protect the blank and guides, then i wrap tap around the but, slide the rod into the tube, and with the running end of the tape I from the but I tape it to outside of the tube and stuff the bottom from but to capped end, or at times just tape the end heavy without a cap, this has worked 100's of times with no failures, USPS under 15 bucks, UPS is around $20.00 bucks,  securing the rod from sliding to protect the tip is priority.

I get your point, but want to make clear: you are dealing with crooked employees in the above commentary, NOT a crooked company. Big Difference.

In fact the case could be made that you coherced the the employee to break company policy, which makes you just as bad as the employee or their employer.

Glass Houses Suck, LMAO. Just picking at you.

They are prices that are fixed and you can open a free account and check em out anytime on their web sight's!!! I pay my own freight and print the labels myself,,,,saves a few cent's!

Your being upset because a guy cheated the company for you!!!! Now you want the whole company to cheat the price in your favor and screw the companie's prices to make you happy,,,,,,,we all pay for this sooner or latter,,,,,,,like Brian said,,,,,glass houses,,,,,, we do understand.

Yeah, I take it all back. I think the OP screwed up and deserved what he got. Come to think of it, I really enjoy paying the $30 dollar shipping cost. In fact, I'm going to write a letter to both UPS and FedEx to personally thank them for all they do and for making shipping so darned afforable in this day and age. I'll probably also request that they raise the prices because, now that I've read all of this, I have discovered that I am indeed cheating them out of money. I will probably write a similar letter to BP when I get done with those. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways guys!! It's always a pleasure!

I've shipped quite a few rods. I think $30 is absolutely ridiculous for a cardboard tube. One company can do it for $18-20 across country while another wants $30. Makes no sense.

I sent a rod to a friend to have some work done on it, cost me $9 to ship it to him USPS Insured. He sent it back in the same tube UPS ground no insurance and it was marked $19 and change. We are talking a trip of about 300 miles. Package was in perfect shape both ways.

Some price gouging going on for sure.

Posted

there is no price gouging anywhere.......if you willing pay it, you willing pay it. That is not gouging especially since there are other option available. (not directed to you Kevin22, just making the general point)

there are 3 or 4 shipping companies to choose from. If you are choosing the highest one, that's your problem, not the company's. Why blame the company for charging as much as possible?

that said, I have always used USPS priority, it is without doubt the cheapest, fastest way to ship ANYTHING, ANYWHERE.

Check it out.

Thats what I was gonna say, I have used the swim noodles, they cost a buck at the dollar store.. If you really wanna have some fun, glue the endcaps on... :happy-devil-0048:

No, if you really want to have some fun ship it in a PVC tube with caps. Take it to the UPS store and when the clerk asks "what are you shipping today?" say "a pipe bo..... I mean a 2X4". See his/her reaction.

When I shipped my rods to Tx I bought a 4" piece of thin wall PVC 8ft long from Lowes with heavy duty end caps. It ran me about $16. I was able to put 7 rods in it with no trouble.
