toddwchandler Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I picked up an Ugly Stick Ultrlight combo tonight that I plan to mainly use for trout fishing. Now that I have it, I am curious how I can use it in my bass fishing arsenal. I generally us a pair of medium heavy 7ft spinning rod and reel combos. Never used an Ultrlight setup. What kinds of lures and baits can I toss with this setup? How will it be different from what I am used to and what are the advantages and disadvantages of an ultralight combo for bass? Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I like them for little rooster tails and tiny lures like that for panfish and small bass. Its a lot of fun. Quote
Cgrinder Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I sometimes throw weightless Zoom plastics and #5 Shad Raps on an UL with 4 lb. mono. It's good fun if you're fishing for 1-2 pounders. Set your drag a little bit loose and have a good time. Quote
derekxec Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 i use one with a shimano sedona 2500 for snook fishing Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 14, 2013 Global Moderator Posted August 14, 2013 Watch out casting with that thing. My dad has a 5' Ugly Stick ultralight and I've seen him smack himself in the back of the head on the cast more than once because the rod is so whippy. I wouldn't use it for any kind of bass fishing, almost impossible to set a hook with. 1 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted August 14, 2013 Super User Posted August 14, 2013 Small to medium sized cranks. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted August 14, 2013 Super User Posted August 14, 2013 According to the commercials you can do anything and everything with it and have no worries about it breaking Any small baits that will benefit from having a whippier rod that aids in casting will work. I am thinking small topwaters, cranks, rooster tails etc... Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted August 14, 2013 Super User Posted August 14, 2013 Roast marshmallows? Lol Quote
PABASS Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I gave mine to my 4yro son, we caught loads of panfish on it.. I will echo another, bass fishing with this rod is hard to get good hooksets, but it can be done just much better tools to do so.. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 14, 2013 Super User Posted August 14, 2013 I'll agree with Bluebasser, the USUL is a pretty whippy noodle of a rod. I've got 2 Ugly Stik LITEs (way better than original US's, IMO), in L action, and M. But the L is still noodly. I've used it for bass fishing, and it works, but it ain't good for a solid hookset. Can be done, though. My boys will use them sometimes for bass fishing. The M is a decent rod, to be honest. If feel isn't necessary for what you're doing, the Ugly Stik works fine. As well, we'll use our Ugly Stik Lites for salt and fresh water live bait situations most often now. They excel there since fish tend to hook themselves in that scenario. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted August 14, 2013 Super User Posted August 14, 2013 Bend it up and store it in the garbage disposal then when the wife goes to work, pull it out and go fishing. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Bend it up and store it in the garbage disposal then when the wife goes to work, pull it out and go fishing. dont you mean trash compactor? lol also, i have a 5'6L ugly stik pro-lite paired with a pflueger trion gx-7 spinning reel that i use for bass fishing on occasion. i have no troubles setting the hook as people are describing. it doesnt take a ton of force to set a hook into a bass. i use it for small weightless plastics and small crankbaits. i mostly use it for pan fishing though. that said, ive hooked and landed 20 inch bass on it... toddwchandler Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 I appreciate the feedback guys. Again, I really bought this combo for trout fishing, just wanted to see if it had an application in the bass world. I use my medium heavy action rods for my bass stuff. Just seeing if this combo would play a part in my bass arsenal. Quote
